Interstellar Movie

Interstellar “Too Much, Too Little”

“Hotshots” looks at a movie!

Interstellar - Movie PosterINTERSTELLAR is the very epitome of a big movie: big production values, big cast, big story, big ideas, but in the end it just might have a small impact on the audience.

When the movie begins, it is the near future, and the Earth is in trouble, because cities have been abandoned, food production is practically the only industry, and yet blights have wiped out almost all of the crops, and dust storms cause life to be suspended while people are forced to take shelter inside.

Michael McConaughey stars as Cooper, a former pilot for NASA who is now a struggling farmer trying to provide a living for his family, which consists of his daughter Murphy, his son Tom, and his dead wife’s father, who is played by John Lithgow.

The reason Cooper is no longer a pilot for NASA is that science has been abandoned for being too expensive and unncecessary, NASA has gone underground, and children in school are being told that Americans never landed on the moon.

One day Cooper and Murphy stumble into a secret NASA compound, where they learn that NASA is still involved in space exploration, only now as a solution to the world’s problems by searching for a planet in another solar system where humanity can travel to live and survive.

The program is being led by Professor Brand, played by Michael Caine, and he tells Cooper, “We need a pilot, and this is the mission you were trained for.”

Professor Brand’s daughter, Amelia, played by Anne Hathaway, is also a scientist, and she will be accompanying Cooper on the mission, which consists of traveling to the planet Saturn, going through a wormhole that is known to exist there, and emerging at another solar system, where they are to find a planet that will be hospitable to humans.

But wait! The story gets even more preposterous.

A black hole is involved in the journey, and because time will be slowed down for Cooper and his crew, they will age much more slowly than the people on Earth.

Thus, Murphy grows up while Cooper is gone, she is now played by Jessica Chastain, and she also becomes a scientist working with Professor Brand.

INTERSTELLAR goes on way too long, it contains too much technobabble, and the loud sound covers up the dialogue.

City using message boards for weekend traffic management

messageboardAbbott Tract and Uptown Neighborhoods parking will be prohibited for weekend event.

It is not uncommon for the nearly 1,200 spaces at the Historic Downtown Parking Facility to fill up on busy weekends, especially this time of year and especially during big annual events like this weekend’s Rhythm & Ribs Festival.

To help those looking for a place to park after the parking facility has reached capacity, the city will this weekend, for the first time, make use of variable message boards to alert drivers that the facility is no longer available and to direct them to areas where parking may be available. Then as parking becomes available in the parking facility because of turnover (i.e. cars leaving), the signs will reflect that availability.

The variable message boards will be strategically located along Ponce de Leon Blvd. and San Marco Ave. to alert drivers if the parking facility is full and of the opportunity afforded by alternative locations in private parking areas along San Marco Ave.

Those who park along San Marco Ave. will not have to walk to Francis Field, site of Rhythm & Ribs Festival, but rather will have access to a free shuttle provided by Old Town Trolley Tours of St. Augustine.

Additionally, to lessen the impact on neighborhoods in the vicinity, event parking will be prohibited in both the Abbott Tract and Uptown Neighborhoods. Streets in the affected area will be signed to alert festival goers of the restrictions.
The use of bicycles is encouraged when possible to lessen the amount of vehicular traffic. Both drivers and cyclists are asked to exercise caution when traveling in congested areas.

The message boards and restricted parking in the neighborhoods will be in effect on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, April 4, 5 and 6.

About Time - Movie Poster

About Time – Movie Trailer

At the age of 21, Tim Lake (Domhnall Gleeson) discovers he can travel in time… The night after another unsatisfactory New Year party, Tim’s father (Bill Nighy) tells his son that the men in his family have always had the ability to travel through time. Tim can’t change history, but he can change what happens and has happened in his own life-so he decides to make his world a better place…by getting a girlfriend. Sadly, that turns out not to be as easy as you might think. Moving from the Cornwall coast to London to train as a lawyer, Tim finally meets the beautiful but insecure Mary (Rachel McAdams). They fall in love, then an unfortunate time-travel incident means he’s never met her at all. So they meet for the first time again-and again-but finally, after a lot of cunning time-traveling, he wins her heart. Tim then uses his power to create the perfect romantic proposal, to save his wedding from the worst best-man speeches, to save his best friend from professional disaster and to get his pregnant wife to the hospital in time for the birth of their daughter, despite a nasty traffic jam outside Abbey Road. But as his unusual life progresses, Tim finds out that his unique gift can’t save him from the sorrows and ups and downs that affect all families, everywhere. There are great limits to what time travel can achieve, and it can be dangerous too. About Time is a comedy about love and time travel, which discovers that, in the end, making the most of life may not need time travel at all.

The Place Beyond the Pines

“The Place Beyond the Pines” a Terrific, Wonderful Drama

“Terrific, Wonderful Drama”

“Hotshots” looks at a movie!

The Place Beyond the Pines is a wonderful drama in three parts about the influence of one generation on the next, or as William Wordsworth put it in “My Heart Leaps Up,” “The child is father of the man.”

The Place Beyond the Pines

The action takes place in Schenectady, New York, and when the movie opens we meet Luke, played by Ryan Gosling, who performs in a traveling circus as a motorcycle stunt daredevil.

One night a young woman named Romina, played by Eva Mendes, approaches him, and Luke recognizes her as the woman he had a fling with the year before when he was in town.

They talk, and Luke gives Romina a ride home, where he tells her that he leaves town the next day and won’t be back for another year.

Well, the next day Luke goes back to Romina’s house to see her, but she is away at work.

The woman who answers the door is holding a baby in her arms, and she tells Luke, “He’s yours.  You want to hold him?”

Luke is immediately smitten by this surprise addition to his life, and he makes some dramatic changes because of it.

He quits his job with the circus, stays in town, and determines that he is going to take care of Romina and the baby, who is named Jason.

Unfortunately, Romina, Jason, and her mother are living in the house of Romina’s boyfriend, Kofi, and Kofi doesn’t take kindly to Luke’s sudden appearance and desires.

Meanwhile, Luke meets a man named Robin, who has a small mechanic shop out in the woods, and he gets a job working for Robin, which also gives Luke a place to stay.

Robin also gives Luke the idea for how Luke can make some fast money to give to Romina and Jason, but it leads to disastrous results.

Then we meet Avery, played by Bradley Cooper, who is a rookie policeman in Schenectady, and his first encounter with Luke makes Avery a hero in the eyes of his fellow policemen, which leads to ill-fated consequences.

Avery has a wife, Jennifer, played by Rose Byrne, and a young baby named AJ.

Then the movie shifts 15 years later to the two teenage boys, Jason and AJ.

The Place Beyond the Pines is a terrific film, and I cannot praise it enough.

North West Burglaries and Arson in St. Johns County

Detectives with the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office continue to investigate a series of crimes that occurred in the North West District of the county within the past several months. Detectives received tips from the community and were able to ascertain that three adults and two teens were involved in several burglaries and arson.

A witness learned of one of the incidents through Facebook and notified the Sheriff’s Office that she saw a vehicle traveling in Jacksonville with music equipment that matched items allegedly stolen from a St. Johns County School.

As detectives followed up on the tip, they began working with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office in an attempt to locate the vehicle and property. The suspect vehicle was located on Race Track Road, where deputies conducted a traffic stop. Upon stopping the vehicle, the driver told deputies he was on probation and he did not want to go to jail. As deputies spoke with the driver, they were able to see several items in plain view inside the vehicle, which they recognized as possible items stolen during the recent burglaries.

Detectives continued to identify and interview additional suspects in this case based on the roadside investigation. Today, three of the suspects were arrested on charges relating to a burglary at Cunningham Creek Elementary School on June 28, 2012. Additionally, information was obtained regarding two of the suspects’ involvement in the arson of two buses at local daycare on June 12, 2012, totaling in $74,000 worth of damage.

The suspects are identified as Shane Michael Havlik, 16, 860 Brookstone Court St. Johns, FL (arrested and charged with burglary theft, trespass, dealing in stolen property and criminal mischief); Montgomery Sinclair McCaffrey, 18, 104 Findhorn Court St. Johns, FL (arrested and charged with accessory after the fact and trespassing); Samuel Lee Maxey, 15, 200 Leese Drive St. Johns, FL (arrested and charged with accessory after the fact and trespassing). Charges have been filed against the two suspects identified in the arson.

The investigation continues into similar crimes in the area and additional charges are pending. Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Mike Smith (904)-209-2142 or Crime Stoppers.

Chernobyl Diaries

“Chernobyl Diaries” or, Attack of the Chernobyl Zombies

“Attack of the Chernobyl Zombies”

“Hotshots” looks at a movie!

Chernobyl Diaries is a horror movie that takes place at the site of the 1985 Chernobyl disaster of the meltdown of the nuclear reactor.

And of all the horror movies that take place at the site of a nuclear meltdown, this is one of them.

Would you be surprised if I told you that there were six young people involved in the story?

Paul is an American living in Russia after having had some sort of falling out with his family.

Chris is Paul’s brother, who is traveling in Russia to visit Paul, and with him are Chris’s girlfriend Natalie and Natalie’s best friend, Amanda.

And then there are Michael and Zoe, who are tourists from Australia, and who join the group when Paul arranges an “extreme tour” for him and the others to take.

Paul knows a former Russian soldier named Uri, who is now an extreme tour guide, and Uri is going to take the six young people to visit the abandoned city of Pripyat, which used to be the home of the workers at Chernobyl and their families before the nuclear disaster.

Regarding the abandoned city, Uri tells his clients, “Nature has reclaimed its rightful home.”

Would you be surprised if I told you that the abandoned city is not totally abandoned?

After being turned back at the official checkpoint entrance to the city, Uri drives his van and its passengers around the back to his special entrance.

Uri says that the radiation levels are low enough to be safe now, and besides, they are going to spend only one day inside the city.

Would you be surprised if I told you that they end up spending more than one day there?

Okay, they hear a scary noise inside one of the abandoned buildings, and they see something that Uri says he has never seen before on his previous trips to Pripyat.

Now, would you be surprised if I told you that when they get back to Uri’s van to leave that it won’t start?

Would you be surprised if I told you that when darkness falls, bad things start to happen to seven people one by one?

Chernobyl Diaries could have been called “Attack of the Chernobyl Zombies,” and I’m not surprised that I didn’t find it scary and I didn’t like it, either.

Due Date Movie

“Due Date” See It

“See It”

DUE DATE could be dismissed as just another “odd couple, “buddy,” “road-trip” movie, but it is much more than that.

It is a very funny, often laugh-out-loud movie about two men forced to travel across the southern United States in order to meet separate deadlines, but I have a feeling that men will enjoy it much more than women will.

However, everyone can enjoy the talent of the two actors who play those two men: Robert Downey Jr. and Zach Galifianakas, who portray Peter and Ethan, respectively.

Peter is an architect, Ethan is an actor wannabe, and the story begins in Atlanta, where they have an unfortunate, but funny encounter at the airport departure curb.

Then they have another funny, but unfortunate encounter before takeoff on the same airplane to Los Angeles, and it just keeps getting better as it goes on.

Due Date MoviePeter and Ethan end up in a rental car and in a hurry to get to California, because Peter’s wife is about to have their first child and Ethan has a scheduled meeting with an agent.

Peter doesn’t want to share the road trip with Ethan, but is forced to, because as Ethan tells him, “I have all the money, the car, and the winning personality.”

Peter and the audience will agree on two of those reasons.

However, Ethan also has a dog traveling with him; glaucoma, which causes a side trip to buy some medical marijuana; and the ashes from his recently deceased father, which he carries in a coffee can.

Unfortunately, Ethan spends almost all his money on the weed, and now they are left with only $60 between them, and they have reached only Birmingham, Alabama.

There is a very funny scene in which they try to get some money wired to them from Peter’s wife; an even funnier scene in Dallas where they stop for help from Darryl, an old friend of Peter’s played by Jamie Foxx; and a scene that tops them all when they accidentally try to cross the border into Mexico, which ends fantastically hilarious.

When they reach the Grand Canyon, where they stop to satisfy Ethan’s wishes, they swap confessions in a touching scene until Ethan reveals the biggest confession of them all, and then we have one final mad dash to meet their . . .

DUE DATE. See it.
