Contest entries for photos, videos, and essays will be accepted starting Monday, July 16
Know the easiest way to start a conversation with another St. Augustine resident? Just ask “So, how’d you get to St. Augustine?” Without a doubt, the story will be interesting for it seems that our city has residents who can boast a host of origins, adventures, and simply great stories about how they arrived in The Nation’s Oldest City or what has made life here special for them.
As part of the city’s 450th anniversary commemoration, the city has launched a contest inviting the public to use their skills at photography, videography or the written word to answer one question: What is your St. Augustine story?
And for telling your story, there is the possibility of winning cash prizes.
Organized under the banner of The Story of Us, the three categories are meant to share what contest organizers describe as “the story of the people and families who have given their heart, soul, sweat and tears to shape not only St. Augustine, but Florida and the United States. It is the story of the making of America, which started in St. Augustine almost 450 years ago.”
Of course, it is not just St. Augustine residents who have a St. Augustine story. Lots of people do and so the contest is open to photographers, videographers, and writers regardless of age, residence, citizenship, or ability level.
For the photography category, entries are limited to one photo with an accompanying title and 25 word or less caption, and for the videography category, the submission must be no more than two minutes in length. Those entering in the essay category are limited to 150 words or less to tell their story. While one person may enter more than one category, only one entry per category is permitted.
First place winners in each category will receive $450, second place received $350, third place $250 and fourth and fifth each being awarded $100.
Entries may be submitted anytime between Monday, July 16 and Thursday, August 16 after which the judging panel will select five entries based on originality, technical excellence, composition, overall impact, artistic merit, and depiction of the contest theme. The work of the finalists will be posted on-line allowing the public the opportunity to vote for its favorite work in each category during the two week period of September 7-21. The winners will be announced by September 28.

Lend Me A Tenor at The Limelight Theatre
Bring the family to see this play about a famed Italian tenor who passes out prior to his performance,
the manager persuades his assistant, an aspiring tenor, to take his place. When Il Stupendo comes to, two Othellos are chasing lingerie-clad women and this classic farce is at its finest! WJCT’s Electro Lounge Movie Series
WJCT’s Electro Lounge at the Ponte Vedra Concert Hall, 1050 A1A N, will present a screening of It’s a Mad, Mad World, Friday, July 20th. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., movie starts at 7:30 p.m. $5 admission fee will be collected at the door. Any dollar contributed over the requested $5 will be matched by an anonymous donor to WJCT and will be used to support 89.9 WJCT. SoMMA (Society of Mixed Media Arts) Exhibition

Butterfly Program at Anastasia State Park
Mike Boulware, Living Exhibit Specialist and Outreach Co-coordinator from The University of Florida’s Butterfly Rainforest will provide a program about butterfly gardening in Florida at 10 a.m. at Anastasia State Park’s Gazebo at the Hilltop picnic area at 10 a.m.

Nature Movies at GTM Reserve
The GTM Research Reserve will present the nature movie “Bag It: Is Your Life Too Plastic?” at 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. at 500 Guana River Rd in Ponte Vedra. Bag It follows “everyman” Jeb Berrier as he tries to make sense of our dependence on plastic bags. NOTE: St. Johns County residents with a valid ID are always admitted free of charge to the Lightner Museum, the Fountain of Youth (special events excluded), the Ximenez-Fatio House, the Oldest Wooden Schoolhouse, Spanish Military Hospital Museum, and the Historic Tours of Flagler College. The daily tours and wine tastings at the San Sebastian Winery are free to everyone. Also, admission is free to everyone at the Authentic Old Drug Store, Fort Matanzas National Monument, Government House Museum, St. Photios Chapel, the Pena-Peck House, the Father Miguel O’Reilly Museum and the Mission Nombre de Dios Museum (donations are welcomed).

Legacy Tours highlight the architectural heritage of the former Hotel Ponce de Leon, a nationally designated historic landmark building, built by Henry Flagler in 1887. It has been eight years since Batman vanished into the night, turning, in that instant, from hero to fugitive. Assuming the blame for the death of D.A. Harvey Dent, the Dark Knight sacrificed everything for what he and Commissioner Gordon both hoped was the greater good. For a time the lie worked, as criminal activity in Gotham City was crushed under the weight of the anti-crime Dent Act. But everything will change with the arrival of a cunning cat burglar with a mysterious agenda. Far more dangerous, however, is the emergence of Bane, a masked terrorist whose ruthless plans for Gotham drive Bruce out of his self-imposed exile. But even if he dons the cape and cowl again, Batman may be no match for Bane.
