Youth shelter gets remodeled and expanded

BOULDER, CO. –Thursday, April 25th is the opening of a key youth resource, Boulder’ Runaway & Homeless Youth (RHY) shelter. The ceremony will begin at 10 am and self-guided house tours will follow the ribbon cutting to view the 2,200 sq. ft. expansion of the shelter which will serve unaccompanied homeless youth (ages 13-24). Featured speakers include Matthew Appelbaum, Mayor of Boulder; Suzy Ageton, City of Boulder Council Member; and Pat Coyle, the Director of the Colorado Division of Housing. A special proclamation in recognition of the Grand Re-Opening will be presented on behalf of John W. Hickenlooper, Governor of the State of Colorado (by Karla Maraccini, Director of Community Partnerships for the Office of the Governor.)
“The Grand Re-Opening of our RHY shelter is significant in two ways,” says Jim Rianoshek, Executive Director of Attention Homes. “First, this fully funded $613,000 project reflects the spirit of generosity that exists here within our community. Anyone who has raised children or worked closely with teens, knows that it takes an extended family and community to raise a child. We are so thankful to the many individuals, businesses and organizations that have supported us every step of the way on this eight month construction project.”
“The second way,” Mr. Rianoshek goes on to say, “is that the renovation of our shelter – the only youth shelter in Boulder County – increases our capacity to provide emergency overnight shelter up to16 boys and girls per night (up from 10) and also allows us to serve 40 youth per day (up from 25) in our day drop-in program. Our hope, with continued community support, is to provide increased supervision and case management; improved mental and physical health care services; family mediation, and both educational and vocational support.”
Attention Homes provides comprehensive care and shelter to runaway, homeless and at-risk youth. In 2012, the organization served 530 youth in its RHY shelter, a 172% increase over the previous year. Through street outreach, day drop-in services and overnight emergency shelter, staff and trained volunteers seek to reduce the estimated 162 unaccompanied youth who are without safe shelter on any given night. While family reunification is the primary goal; when it’s not possible, Attention Homes finds transitional bridges to more permanent housing. In 2012, 81% of Attention Homes’ overnight shelter youth were able to return home to their families or became self-sufficient.
Bowes Spiegel Architects Inc. & Project Managers and Symmetry Builders, Inc. led the design and construction team. Major benefactors include the Wyss Foundation and Jackie Long, the City of Boulder Affordable Housing Fund, Ronald McDonald House Charities, The Colorado Group, and The Steffens Foundation.

Deadline is April 12 for Scholarship Funds for Multicultural Students

Boulder County, Colo. – Boulder County Community Action Programs (CAP) has scholarship monies to award to low-income students. Scholarships range from $500-$1,000 each and are made possible through proceeds from CAP’s Annual Multicultural Awards Banquet.
Applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Minimum one year residency in Boulder County
- Currently attending university, community college or technical school as a full-time undergraduate or graduate student
- Low to moderate-income level.
Preference is given to students actively involved in a student organization or the community. This is not a scholarship for students who will be graduating from high school this spring/summer.
This is a one-time scholarship; prior CAP multicultural scholarship recipients are not eligible to apply again.

Work begins on a county master plan for mountain trails network

Public hearings to begin April 18
Boulder County, Colo. – Local, state, and federal land-management agencies, to include the U.S. Forest Service, National Park Service, Colorado Parks & Wildlife, Boulder County, City of Boulder, and City of Longmont are partnering to develop a long‐term, multi‐agency master plan for a network of access points and travel corridors for non‐motorized users in the foothills and mountains of Boulder County.
What: Regional Mountain Trails Master Planning
When: Meetings will be held from mid-April to mid-May, the first meeting will be held on April 18, 6:30 – 8:00 p.m.
Where: Eleven locations throughout the county, the first meeting will be held at the Boulder County Courthouse, 1325 Pearl Street, 3rd floor
The goal of the Regional Mountain Trails Master Plan is to connect communities and recreation areas in the mountains and foothills to regional trails in the plains. The plan will emphasize linking existing trails and trail systems.
“We are excited to collaborate with the community and our fellow land managers on this plan for trails that will direct our work as individual organizations toward a common goal for trails over the coming years,” said Justin Atherton-Wood, Resource Planner for Boulder County Parks and Open Space. “This plan will be drafted in a manner that is sensitive to the resources and values unique to this part of the region, and one that contributes to a more sustainable future for Boulder County.”
To help define the many unique opportunities and challenges of this effort, the partners are initiating a period of public outreach this spring to gather comments on the community’s needs, expectations, and concerns with the project. It is anticipated that this initial phase will result in a set of principles and community values that will guide the remainder of this year-long planning process.
