Boulder Symphony music director Devin Patrick Hughes will conduct the orchestra in the World Premiere of celebrated composer Austin Wintory’s “Gray Rain”. Also on the program is the beloved Gloria by Francis Poulenc, Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Toward the Unknown Region, and Johannes Brahms’ Nanie. The program concludes with the exciting Variations on a Theme of Haydn by Brahms. Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for students and seniors. Free backyard composting workshops begin Wednesday
Boulder County, Colo. – The Boulder County Resource Conservation Division is offering free Backyard Composting Workshops, one each in Boulder, Longmont and Broomfield.
Space is limited to 30 people per workshop. Interested parties may register online at www.BoulderCountyRecycles.org or RSVP with name, phone number and/or email, and number of attendees to Gale Elstun at gelstun@bouldercounty.org or 720-564-2222.

In addition to utilizing the new curbside compost bins, residents are encouraged to compost food scraps and yard waste at home. Keeping organics in backyards is an effective way to reduce household carbon footprints and provide quality compost for use in gardens.
When organic materials such as food waste and leaves are sent to the landfill they are buried along with the trash and they break down in a way that produces methane, a greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change. Composting does not create methane; it is a natural decomposition process that changes the food and yard waste into a beneficial soil amendment.

Wildfire Awareness Month kicks off with Saturday workshop
Boulder County, Colo. – October is Wildfire Awareness Month in Boulder County and will feature a full slate of educational programs and events, community mitigation and forestry thinning efforts, and the launch of the Boulder County Community Wildfire Protection Plan.
A free half-day wildfire mitigation workshop in Nederland on Oct. 1 will help guide county residents through a checklist of modifications they can make to better prepare their homes in defense of a wildfire.
“Nearly half of Boulder County is forested and at high risk for wildfires,” Boulder County Community Wildfire Protection Planner Jim Webster said. “Population growth in the forested areas has resulted in an increased risk of wildfire and in more direct impacts to residents, so we want to help people take a role in preventing and preparing for future wildfires.”
Wildfire mitigation measures can help minimize the destructive effects a wildfire has on forested lands and homes in the wildland urban interface and the following Wildfire Awareness Month events were developed to educate residents and promote action to reduce the frequency and severity of future wildfires in Boulder County:
