Wednesday morning helicopter flight will bring noise to Fourmile burn area

Boulder County, Colo. – Residents are advised that a low-level helicopter flight will create noise above the Fourmile Canyon Fire burn area this Wednesday, Aug. 31 between 8-10 a.m.
Boulder County has contracted with Wright Water Engineers to identify potential problems associated with flooding and resultant debris flows in the burn area. The helicopter flight will expedite Wright Water’s reconnaissance of the area.
“The goal of this effort is to evaluate the cost and feasibility of mitigating and preventing ongoing flooding and debris flows in the burn area versus the cost and feasibility of continuing to take a reactive approach to flooding and debris flows,” Boulder County Transportation Director George Gerstle said.
“This will give a much better idea of what we can do to keep typical rainstorms from becoming emergencies for the next 5-10 years.”

County seeking mentors to help change the lives of juveniles

Volunteers can help teens stay out of incarceration
Boulder County, Colo. – Boulder County is looking for volunteers willing to dedicate their time on a weekly basis to help local teens achieve positive life changes.
The Boulder County Community Services Mentor Program is seeking adults who can work well with teens, be a positive role model, and commit to three hours of mentoring per week. Volunteer time essentially consists of activities enjoyed by participants, whether it is going to a ballgame, watching a movie or just grabbing a bite to eat.
The Mentor Program matches adults and juveniles one-on-one in order to provide youths with enduring links to positive supports in the community. Adult role models provide the teens with a unique support relationship that can promote the development of positive assets and reduce the likelihood of recidivism. Mentors also provide individual attention that separates teens from the potential influences of higher-risk peers.
Volunteers are required to complete training and commit to mentor a teen for one year. The training will be held in the evenings on Oct. 11 and 12. Mentors will meet with their teens once a week for 2-3 hours according to a flexible schedule that meets their needs and the schedule of their mentees. Mentors can plan activities that meet their interests; current mentoring pairs have participated in activities such as pottery painting, horseback riding, dance classes and movies.

Parking enforcement to be increased at Hessie Trailhead

Boulder County, Colo. – The Boulder County Sheriff’s Office and Transportation Department will be enforcing parking restrictions beginning this weekend at the Hessie Trailhead on Fourth of July Road (County Road 111) west of the town of Eldora.
Weekend congestion near the trailhead and along the road has resulted in gridlock and created unsafe conditions for residents and visitors. As a result of the number of vehicles and people attempting to navigate through the area, it would be impossible for an emergency vehicle to get from Eldora to the trailhead in a timely manner.

“This is major safety issue that needs to be addressed right away,” Boulder County Transportation Director George Gerstle said. “There is very limited parking and it is important to keep the road clear so people can recreate safely and access is maintained for emergency responders.”
Parking is also discouraged in the town of Eldora. Visitors are encouraged to carpool or visit other locations during the remaining busy summer weekends.
