Commissioners to jiggle district boundaries?

Boulder County, Colo. – The Board of County Commissioners is now considering a fifth proposed district boundary alignment for Boulder County.
Based on public feedback to the original four options, the commissioners directed staff to draw up an additional option for them to review before making a decision prior to the redistricting deadline of Sept. 30.
Option E is the latest option available for comment and was created according to the following guidelines:
• Keep communities of interest intact (for example, commissioners heard that Niwot and Gunbarrel prefer to be aligned together with east county communities).
• Use clear boundary lines.
• Allow for growth.
o Option E places more population (approx. 100,000) in District 1, which includes the city of Boulder, because it is expected to grow the least. Districts 2 and 3, which are expected to grow more, have populations of roughly 96,000 and 98,000, respectively.
The commissioners will consider all district options and make a final decision at a business meeting scheduled for 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Sep. 27, in the Commissioners’ Hearing Room.

Per state statue, County Commissioners’ districts must be revised after each federal census to assure roughly equal population per district. Boulder County is divided into three districts and one commissioner is elected from each district by the voters of the whole county.
Boulder deadline approaching to register to vote in upcoming election

The deadline to register for the 2011 coordinated election, which will be conducted by mail ballot, is Oct. 3.
Boulder County voters can visit BoulderCountyVotes.org to register to vote, request a mail ballot, or check and update their voter registration. They can also call 303-413-7740 for more information or visit one of three Boulder County Clerk & Recorder’s Office branches: 1750 33rd St. in Boulder; 529 Coffman St. in Longmont; or 722 Main St. in Louisville.
Voters who have moved since the previous election will need to update their registration if they plan to vote in the upcoming election.
Election Day is Nov. 1, but voters will begin receiving ballots in mid-October.
Key Dates for the 2011 Coordinated Election:
· Monday, Oct. 3: Last day to register to vote for the election.
· Tuesday, Oct. 25: Last day to apply for a ballot if you’d like to receive it by mail. (Active voters can apply for and receive a ballot in person through Election Day.)
· Nov. 1: Election Day. Ballots must be in hands of Boulder County Clerk & Recorder’s Office no later than 7 p.m.

Sheriff Pelle orders outdoor fire ban

Sheriff Joe Pelle has enacted a fire ban, which restricts open burning and prohibits the discharge of any and all fireworks and model rockets in the unincorporated mountain areas of Boulder County.
This includes all unincorporated areas west of U.S. 36 (North Foothills Highway), and west of Highway 93 (South Foothills Highway) as well as Rabbit Mountain Open Space (see map).
During the fire ban, open burning is permitted only under the following circumstances:

Fire contained within liquid or gas fuel stoves

Camp fires in U.S. Forest Service improved/maintained campgrounds that are currently open to the public*(see separate news release from the U.S. Forest Service)

Charcoal grill fires on private property
Charcoal grills at county open space shelters on mountain properties are also closed during this ban. This includes, but is not limited to, Rabbit Mountain, Heil Valley Ranch, Hall Ranch, Betasso Preserve, and Walker Ranch.
The ban will remain in effect until the hazardous fire conditions subside. Anyone found in violation of the ban may be convicted of a Class 2 petty offense and may be subject to a $500 fine. Higher fines may be imposed for subsequent offenses.
Fire ban rationale
The Boulder County foothills have continued to dry out after months of moderate moisture. Currently, Boulder County has a high fire danger rating, as determined by the National Weather Service National Fire Danger rating System. This is due to a combination of dry fuels, hot and dry weather and an increase in regional wildland fire activity.
It is anticipated that with the continued late summer and early fall drying season and the expected beginning of the Chinook winds, Boulder County will continue to have a high fire danger rating.
State statutes authorize counties to impose fire restrictions when the threat of wildfire has been determined by credible and quantifiable data, to be “high.” The Sheriff’s Office relies upon data from the U.S. Forest Service, the National Weather Service, and local experience with fire conditions to make this determination.
*Note: as of Sep. 2, fire restrictions are also in place on portions of National Forest System lands in Boulder and Larimer Counties in support of the fire ban by Boulder County. (Read the news release from the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests and Pawnee National Grassland)
