Property value appeals must be filed by June 1

Boulder County, Colo. – The Boulder County Assessor’s Office would like to remind property owners that the deadline to appeal property values in Boulder County is this Wednesday, June 1.
Property owners can file an appeal if they believe their property has not been valued appropriately. In order to make the most accurate property value comparisons possible when filing an appeal, property owners are encouraged to review and include information about sales data specific to their market area for the two-year evaluation period of 2008-10. These sales data are available online at www.bouldercounty.org/live/property/pages/comp2011sales.aspx.
Notices of Value were mailed to all property owners in Boulder County on May 1. State statute requires all properties in Colorado be re-valued by county assessors in odd-numbered years. Actual property values for 2011 were based on market activity during the timeframe prior to June 30, 2010. These sales are time trended to that date. Per statutory requirements, these values do not represent market activity after June 30, 2010.
Appeals may be made by mail, online, by fax or in person. All appeals, regardless of valuation method, must be filed or postmarked by 11:59 p.m. on June 1. In-person appeals must be filed at the Assessor’s Office by 5 p.m. on June 1. An appeal form can be downloaded online or requested by phone. Additionally, property owners can file an e-appeal online without having to mail or fax a form to the Assessor’s Office.

Volunteers needed for restorative justice program

Boulder County, Colo. – Boulder County Community Justice Services is seeking volunteers for a restorative justice program designed to help offenders repair harm done to the community.
Volunteers will work with clients who have committed misdemeanor crimes and have been ordered by the court to do community service with government agencies and nonprofit organizations.
Volunteers may serve as Case Managers or Case Assistants in Boulder or Longmont. Both positions require a six-month commitment and 6-8 hours per week during regular business hours.
Case Managers assist in matching clients with suitable community service opportunities and monitor clients to ensure they are fulfilling their court-appointed responsibilities. Case Assistants help with administrative tasks such as tracking client hours and appointments.
Volunteers may also participate in the “Caring Crafts” program, which collects handmade items like furniture, quilts and art made by clients and donates them to nonprofits.
The program is open to volunteers and students looking to gain professional experience in case management, restorative justice and community service. Participants must be 21 years of age or older with good communication skills and an ability to work effectively with diverse populations.

Boulder police gearing up for 2011 Law Enforcement Torch Run

The Boulder Police Department’s 2011 Law Enforcement Torch Run to benefit Special Olympics will be held on Friday, May 20, 2011 at 9:30 a.m. The event will consist of a 4-mile run/bike portion, as well as a 1-mile walk and parade. Dozens of police officers, City of Boulder employees and their families and friends are expected to participate.
The registration deadline for this event is Wednesday, May 18. This year, a youth registration was added and kids under the age of 15 can register for a reduced fee of $20, which includes a T-shirt. The regular registration fee is $30. Members of the public are invited to join officers for the Torch Run. To register online, go to www.firstgiving.com/soco.
The goal of the annual Torch Run is to raise funds and awareness for Special Olympics and people with intellectual disabilities.
Walk/Parade
Participants will start at the Public Safety Building at 1805 33rd St. in Boulder, and then start walking south along 33rd Street to the north sidewalk of Arapahoe Avenue. From there, the group will walk east to the 38th Street underpass for the Boulder Creek Path. The remainder of the walk will be along the creek path to Scott Carpenter Park. Walkers can either reverse their direction along the same path or use the signal light intersection pedestrian crosswalk at 30th Street and Arapahoe Avenue to return to the Public Safety Building.
Run/Bike
The 4-mile run/bike portion will start and finish at Scott Carpenter Park. Participants will use the Boulder Creek Path, leaving from Scott Carpenter Park headed west to a turn-around point at the Library bridge. From there, the route will be back along the creek path, east to the 38th Street underpass and back to the park.
