LINGUISTICS INSTITUTE TO OFFER FREE FILMS, WORKSHOPS AT CU-BOULDER

The biennial event has never been held in Colorado and is expected to attract about 500 people to CU-Boulder. The previous three institutes were held at the University of California, Berkeley (2009), Stanford (2007) and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (2005).
In addition to the free and public events, the institute will offer 80 courses taught by distinguished faculty, with enrollment available to the public through CU-Boulder’s Continuing Education and Professional Studies.
For one class, Field Methods in Linguistics, a speaker of the Idi language of Papua New Guinea will travel to Boulder. The Idi language is spoken by only about 1,600 people and is barely documented. Students in the class led by Professor Nicholas Evans of Australian National University will work intensively for one month to provide the first extensive documentation of this language.
On July 13 at 7 p.m. in Muenzinger Psychology and Biopsychology room E050 will be a free showing of “We Are Still Here,” a film examining language and culture revitalization efforts of the Wampanoag Native Americans in Massachusetts.
And on July 20 at 7 p.m. in Muenzinger Psychology and Biopsychology room E050 there will be a free showing of “Speaking in Tongues,” a film following four children through the world of bilingualism and bilingual education in the United States.
“Language is fundamental to virtually everything we do in life, and it is perhaps the single most important thing that separates humans from all other life forms,” said Andrew Cowell, associate director of the institute and a CU-Boulder professor of linguistics. “We take it for granted so much of the time until someone makes the smallest misstatement, a machine translation produces something goofy or we pick up on a subtle accent we recognize — and then political careers can be compromised, corporate initiatives can become the target of worldwide mockery or lifelong friendships can be initiated.
“The institute will focus specifically on ‘Language in the World’ and the interdisciplinary connections between linguistics and other fields such as psychology, sociology, anthropology, law, computer science and the media,” he said.
The institute is sponsored by the Linguistic Society of America, which is the main professional body for linguists in the United States, with major support from CU-Boulder.

Boulder Airport Day to be held June 18 COOL FUN VIDEO #boulder

“With lineage dating back to 1928, Boulder Municipal Airport has played an amazing part in aviation history,” said Boulder Municipal Airport Manager Tim Head. “On Airport Day, we bring out the planes, old and new, to celebrate. It is a great combination of fun and education that everyone in the family can enjoy.”
In addition to showcasing airport amenities, the event will feature numerous types of aircraft, including military helicopters, sport airplanes, experimental airplanes, WWII aircraft and antique airplanes. There will also be kids’ activities, shops, food vendors, and rides for purchase in a helicopter and an open-cockpit bi-plane.
At approximately 6:30 a.m., there will also be up to six hot air balloons conducting a joint lift-off. Spectators may park on the east side of the terminal building, at 3335 Airport Road, to watch the launches from up close.
CU STUDENT INSTALLATIONS TO HELP ENGAGE COMMUNITY IN UNIVERSITY HILL DEVELOPMENT

The temporary installations will serve as the basis of a community charrette, an intense planning and design collaboration, from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. on June 3. The event is part of the International Town & Gown Association conference and is cosponsored by the city of Boulder.
“We take great pride in partnering with the city to provide opportunities for students to solve real-world problems,” said Frank Bruno, vice chancellor for administration. “The ability of our students to connect and engage the University Hill community through this interdisciplinary project is truly remarkable and can result in progress for the neighborhood.”
Charrette participants will explore revitalization ideas for University Hill that encompass the education, research and community service resources of CU-Boulder and the vibrant culture of the area as a commercial and residential district, according to organizers.
The project stems from a CU-Boulder Maymester course called Finding Ground. The student works include two interactive survey boards, two tables and 25 hammocks, all for public use.
“The installations are meant to bring people together to explore ideas for community connectedness and the overall use of public space,” said Finding Ground student Richard Mapes, a senior in architecture. “It’s amazing to see so many groups working to positively change the course of University Hill.”
Students carried out mapping exercises, interviews, precedent studies and presentations. They also conceptualized, designed and built the installations.
“We are excited about the close collaboration we’ve had with the university in preparing for this event, and look forward to learning more about the students’ work and their creative ideas during Friday’s charrette,” said David Driskell, executive director of Community Planning and Sustainability for the city of Boulder. “University Hill is a unique Boulder neighborhood, where the university and community literally come together. This course and Friday’s activities are just one example of how we can work together to make the Hill a vibrant and successful place that is welcoming for everybody.”
Students also maintained a group blog and developed a quick response code, which is displayed on three project information signs located on University Hill. It also will be stenciled in chalk on University Hill sidewalks. Visitors with the appropriate cellular phone technology can scan the QR code to be linked to the project website for more information.
