CU-BOULDER STUDENT SHANE BALDAUF WINS NATIONAL UDALL SCHOLARSHIP

Shane Baldauf, a sophomore in architecture and planning at the University of Colorado Boulder who is dedicated to ‘green’ and affordable housing, has been awarded a prestigious Udall Scholarship.
The $5,000 scholarship from the Morris K. Udall and Stewart L. Udall Foundation is awarded to U.S. sophomores and juniors with a commitment to careers related to the environment, Native American health care or tribal public policy. He will be recognized at an August ceremony in Tucson, Ariz., attended by other recipients, policymakers and community leaders.
Since setting foot on the CU-Boulder campus with a Boettcher Scholarship, which covers tuition and living expenses for four years, Baldauf has committed to using the time he would have spent working to pay for college for volunteering. His volunteer work with Flatirons Habitat for Humanity has enriched his interest in sustainable building practices and civic engagement.
“Not only is ‘green’ construction good for the environment, but homes that perform more efficiently benefit the occupants too,” said Baldauf. “If you think about it, the people who most need affordable housing are also the ones who need the lowest utility bills, and we’re working to provide that situation through Habitat for Humanity houses.”
Baldauf co-founded the company BOULD, which implements a program called HabitatPro. The program helps integrate U.S. Green Building Council benchmarks called Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, or LEED, standards into Habitat for Humanity construction. Through HabitatPro, professionals and students working and volunteering grow from experiential learning opportunities.
“Students can come out and gain unique, hands-on experience by building LEED homes, while also earning LEED professional credentials,” said Baldauf. “These Habitat houses are some of the most sustainable being built anywhere, and the experience gives participants a leg up in the building design and construction job market.”
Since 1996, eight CU-Boulder students have been recognized with a Udall Scholarship.
“Having yet another CU student recognized by the Udall Foundation is a wonderful testament to our students’ commitment to work on environmental issues and community development,” said Deborah Viles, top scholarship director at CU-Boulder. “Shane has shown exemplary skills and dedication as a student and he will undoubtedly make significant contributions to society in his career.”
An independent review committee selected this year’s class of 80 Udall Scholars. Baldauf was chosen from a pool of 510 candidates nominated by 231 colleges and universities across the country.

2011 Green Frontier Fest on Sunday, May 1 in Boulder

The City of Boulder’s Local Environmental Action Division (LEAD) is partnering with the ReDirect Guide and the Boulder Green Building Guild (BGBG) to present the 2011 Green Frontier Fest at Boulder’s Central Park, on Sunday, May 1, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This free festival will promote options for healthy and sustainable living.
The Green Frontier Fest will feature BGBG’s annual Green Building Product & Service Fair and is intended to showcase all things “green” in the Boulder valley – from cutting-edge renewable technologies to everyday solutions that can be implemented in the home. The event gives residents and visitors an opportunity to enjoy interactive and educational exhibits, sustainable food and drink from vendors, children’s activities, music, entertainment and special presentations by guest speakers.
“We strive to make our community a more sustainable and a healthier place to live, work, and play,” said Kristen Hartel, a LEAD Residential Sustainability Specialist. “LEAD is supportive of the Green Frontier Fest’s vision to showcase environmentally and socially responsible initiatives, products, and choices, as well as promote companies that make up our local economy.”
BGBG’s role in the fair offers attendees face-to-face interaction with architects, builders, solar specialists, heating and cooling experts, energy auditors and other green building service providers.
“The 5th Annual Green Building Product and Service Fair is a must for anyone considering a remodel or new construction project,” said BGBG’s Member & Outreach Manager Meagan Forney. “With so many energy efficiency programs and incentives available today, the time has never been better for homeowners to consider making their home or building more comfortable.”
The Green Frontier Fest was first held in Denver in August 2008, as part of the Democratic National Convention. Since then, ReDirect has been co-producing sustainability-focused events throughout the Front Range.

Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks board to receive the (CCG) final proposals for land west of Boulder

The Open Space Board of Trustees (OSBT) monthly meeting is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 19, at the New Vista High School auditorium, 700 20th St. in Boulder. The purpose of this meeting is for the OSBT to receive the final recommendations from the Community Collaborative Group on the management of the West Trail Study Area (West TSA). Time for public comment on the recommendations will be provided at the meeting. A group of local residents has been working with city staff since September 2009 to develop recommendations on practical and feasible ways to improve community services in the West TSA. The CCG includes representatives from recreation, conservation and cultural resource interests, as well as neighborhoods adjacent to the West TSA. After 14 months of meetings and field trips, the CCG is prepared to present its final recommendations to the board. The CCG’s recommendations will become an integral part of the West TSA Plan. The plan will provide management direction for OSMP lands north of Eldorado Springs Drive, south of Linden Avenue and west of Broadway/Colorado Highway 93, for the next ten years. Background documents, including the CCG’s recommendations, are available at the West TSA website, www.westtsa.org. “We are extremely grateful for the commitment to the collaborative process, time, and creativity contributed by CCG members.
