Avoid East Valmont like the plague
Sep 19th
Daytime closures start Sept. 28
Boulder County, Colo. – The Boulder County Transportation Department has begun the reconstruction of Valmont Road between 75th and 95th streets.
Construction and significant delays are expected to last through mid-November. Cyclists and motorists are encouraged to use detours to avoid delays.
Beginning Wednesday, Sept. 28, Valmont Road will be closed between 75th and 95th streets to all vehicles, including bicycles, on weekdays only (Monday-Friday) from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The daytime closures will be in effect until Nov. 8.
Accommodations have been made to allow passage of emergency vehicles and school buses along with local traffic and delivery vehicles to homes within the work zone.
All vehicles should expect variable pavement conditions, significant construction activity and potential delays along Valmont Road for the duration of the project.
“Valmont Road is one of the gateway corridors within the county,” construction supervisor Joe Bath said. “This project will be a major improvement to the road and will enhance safety for all forms of traffic.”
The Valmont Shoulders and Roadway Reconstruction project includes the complete removal and replacement of the existing asphalt pavement along with the addition of paved shoulders to each edge of the road.
The City of Boulder’s trail connection to the Teller Lake trailhead will also be reconstructed and the trail crossing of Valmont Road improved. The Teller Lake trail and trailhead will be closed sometime in early October to accommodate that portion of the project work.
Schedules are subject to change. Message boards are located in the area to alert residents of any construction schedule changes and additional information is available at www.BoulderCounty.org/Transportation. Contact Tim Swope at tswope@bouldercounty.org to be added to the notification email list.
Tree removals to impact traffic the week of Aug. 29
Aug 27th
Traffic impacts include:
● Tuesday, Aug. 30, between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.: Intermittent lane closures on Pearl Street between 18th and 20th streets due to the removal of a large Siberian elm tree in poor health.
● Wednesday, Aug. 31, between 6 and 9 a.m.: Intermittent delays to bike and pedestrian traffic along the Boulder Creek Path during tree pruning operations west of the Boulder Public Library Main Branch.
● Wednesday, Aug. 31, between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.: The northbound, outside lane of Broadway Avenue between Arapahoe Avenue and Canyon Boulevard will be closed so crews can remove a honeylocust tree in poor health. The tree was struck by lightning in July 2010 and its health has significantly declined since that time. The transit stop at Central Park will be moved south to the bridge over Boulder Creek during the removal operation.
● Thursday, Sept.1, between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.: The southbound, outside lane of Broadway Avenue between College and Euclid avenues will be closed so crews can remove a silver maple tree that is a safety concern due to a large trunk cavity and advanced decay.
Most of the wood from the trees being removed will be recycled into mulch and used in City of Boulder parks. Trees that are being removed will be replaced where possible next spring.
Grant to allow Youth Corps to hire 12 for land stewardship
Jun 16th
The GOCO board voted to disperse $500,000 in lottery funds statewide to local government and open space organizations for critical outdoor recreation and land conservation projects that will enhance Colorado’s trails, parks, open spaces and wildlife habitat. The BCYC will receive $20,093 of those funds for local projects in support of the City of Longmont’s Button Rock Preserve Watershed.
The funding results in 12 jobs for young people in Longmont to help with much needed forestry work, noxious weed removal and fire prevention activities at Button Rock Preserve.
Statewide, local governments will receive a total of $250,000 and open space organizations will receive $250,000 to hire youth corps to implement land stewardship projects.
“This is good news for our youth, who gain valuable transferable skills and get a great outdoors experience,” BCYC program manager Judy Wolfe said. “And it’s good news for our community and environment, which can reap the benefits of our young people’s dedication and hard work for generations to come.”
