19th annual water festival teaches students how to protect and conserve water

May 4th

More than 1,000 4th and 5th grade students from 44 classrooms in 17 Boulder area schools will take part in the 19th annual “Operation: Water Festival” from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, May 11, at the University Memorial Center (UMC) on the campus of the University of Colorado at Boulder, 1669 Euclid Ave.

The water festival engages students in hands-on activities that teach them where drinking water comes from and how to protect and conserve this valuable natural resource. Students attend a series of classes where they also learn about the history, geography and science of water, explore the Boulder Creek watershed and its geology, and investigate the animals and plants that rely on water for survival.

This year marks the sixth year of the Operation Water Festival pre-festival program where teachers and students complete pre-festival activities on fundamental water awareness, conservation, pollution prevention and flooding. The packet includes a complete teacher’s packet featuring teacher’s guides, student worksheets and trivia questions for each water topic. “Water Agents” receive a certificate upon completion of the activities.

A key benefit of the Operation Water Festival materials is the take-home water agent book. This book features homework assignments that encourage students to work with family members to complete the assignments. As a result, parents and siblings alike also learn about water protection and conservation.

Festival sponsors include the Keep it Clean Partnership, the City of Boulder, Northern Water, the UMC, the CU-Boulder Community Relations Office and the Federal Bureau of Reclamation.

For more information, contact Curry Rosato, City of Boulder watershed outreach coordinator, at 303-829-9316.

‘MISSOULA, MT, May 3, 2011 –/WORLD-WIRE/– The International
Association of Wildland Fire (IAWF) announces Global Wildfire
Awareness Week, from May 1-7, 2011 in the Northern Hemisphere, with a
theme of “Your Home…Your Responsibility.

Wildfire affects residents, businesses and governments on every
continent and we are using our resources to link and assist those
groups,” said IAWF President Chuck Bushey. “This is a key time to
share wildfire prevention information with the world,” he added. The
IAWF’s full proclamation and a growing body of resources are available
on a new website — wildfireworld.org — orientated towards
homeowners, firefighters, communities and governmental organizations
throughout the world.

We are excited to globally link wildfire professional to share
information, research, and practical tools in the effort to reduce
wildfire impacts,” said Bushey. This dynamic site allows sharing of
community wildfire profiles, fire prevention materials and real-time,
global fire occurrence information. “The site will build as time
goes on and will become more vibrant with submissions from all parts
of the globe,” he continued. The Southern Hemisphere Awareness Week
kicks off October 1.

This initiative grows from IAWF’s mission to foster leadership and
communication for the wildland fire community. This bi-annual
campaign seeks to expand IAWF’s commitment to wildfire prevention
around the globe. As the Proclamation notes, “Our vision is a
global society that is not only vigilant but also knowledgeable on
how to live in fire-prone environments. We ask for your
participation, not only through this week, but throughout the
year.”

“Wildfires are a growing problem, globally and locally,” said
IAWF Board Member Ron Steffens. “The first year of Global Wildfire
Awareness Week we are building a clearinghouse of current, evolving
information.” The new site showcases community profiles such as
Greece, home to massive wildfires in 2010, and Washington state
(USA), with more profiles being added over the coming months. Fire
prevention and home safety evaluation resources are available along
with links to global wildfire news. Wildland firefighters are
encouraged to upload their “Community Profile” as we observe
globally how each local community prevents unplanned wildfires.

CALL STATE LEGISLATORS RE WALL STREET THEFT OF HOME EQUITY

Call/Email CO House Members about S.B. 234: Stop Wall Street from Stealing Your Home Equity

Ask the chair and vice-chair of the Colorado House of Representatives Local Government Committee and your Colorado State House rep. to support SB 234, which prohibits the dangerous financial scheme of private transfer fee covenants on homes. Often unnoticed by homeowners, Wall Street Home Resale Fees (otherwise known as Private Transfer Fees) are inserted into home sale contracts by private third parties, and require that every time a home is sold for the next 99 years, a percentage of the sale of the home (usually 1%) be paid to the third party.  In return, homeowners receive nothing but reduced home equity and a harder time selling their home.
SB 234 passed in the passed in the Senate on 4/29/11 by a vote of 31-2 with two excused. The bill was introduced today in the Colorado House of Representatives Local Government Committee. Please call and email Rep Laura Bradford, Chair  at 303-866-2583 and  laurabradford55@gmail.co and LIBBY SZABO, Vice Chair  at 303-866-2962 and libby.szabo.house@state.co.us and your representative (see www.congress.org if you’re not sure who that is) and ask them to support SB 234.

The Coalition to Stop Wall Street Home Resale Fees (http://www.stophomeresalefees.org/about) is organizing to fight the dangerous financial scheme of private transfer fee covenants and to protect homeowners across the country. Together, they are fighting to ensure that homeowners keep full equity in their home, and have the freedom to buy or sell their home without paying off an unaffiliated third party.
