FCC Recognizes St. Johns County

Citing progress St. Johns County has made in transitioning to a new 800 Mhz

The FCC deadline for organizations to restrict their bandwidth use is January 1, 2013. Noting the progress
St. Johns County has made in transitioning from VHF band to an 800 MHz system, the Commission
stated that strict application of the narrowbanding rules would force the County to spend significant time
and money to narrowband a system it intends to abandon shortly thereafter. At the request of St. Johns
County, the FCC also granted similar waivers to all municipalities within the County.
“In granting the deadline waiver, the FCC acknowledged the significant amount of time and resources we
have dedicated to planning and executing the transition to a modernized intergovernmental radio system.”
said Carl Shank, St. Johns County Fire Rescue Chief. “Interoperable and reliable communications will
greatly improve the capabilities and safety of all St. Johns County emergency services providers to better
serve our residents and visitors to this area.”
St. Johns County entered into a contract in December 2011 to purchase eleven radio towers and an 800
MHz intergovernmental radio system capable of supporting and providing interoperable communications
between all public safety agencies and government services. The new system is projected to be
operational within the first 90 days of 2013. The extended FCC deadline of June 30, 2013 provides ample
time to complete construction, installation, and testing of the new system. The FCC noted that the new
radio system will significantly upgrade the County’s communications capabilities, improve the safety and
reliability of public safety operations, and better serve the public interest.

St. Johns County Road and Bridge Department to Improve the Safety and Accessibility of North Beach Subdivision

The St. Johns County Road and Bridge Department is scheduled to begin construction on Oak Street in the North Beach Subdivision of Anastasia Island on September 4. The work is estimated to be complete in approximately four weeks.
The project consists of paving Oak Street between 12th St. and 13th St. and correcting the alignment of the existing pavement between 13th St. and 14th St. The improvements made to Oak Street will allow greater accessibility for public and emergency response vehicles, increased visibility of children and pedestrians, and create a safer traffic path for residents whose driveways meet Oak Street.
By paving the uneven dirt section of Oak Street, the County will also eliminate costly grating maintenance. During construction, short periods of road closings are anticipated. Signs will be posted to assist in redirecting through traffic.

Valencia and Cordova Street closures set for next week

Installation of brick crosswalks necessitate closures
The construction of two brick crosswalks near the intersection of Valencia and Cordova Streets will necessitate the closing of each of those streets for portions of next week.
Cordova St. will be closed starting at 8:00am on Monday, August 6 and will continue to be closed through noon on Wednesday, August 8.
Valencia St. will be closed starting at 1:00pm on Wednesday, August 8 through 6:00pm on Friday, August 10.
Detours will be clearly marked, bur traffic may want to avoid the area during this construction.
