Flagler College theater department presents ‘Six Degrees of Separation’

The Flagler College theater department will present the John Guare play “Six Degrees of Separation” beginning Oct. 19 in the Lewis Auditorium at Flagler College.
The story centers on Ouisa Kittredge, a Fifth Avenue socialite and Flan, her purveyor of high-art husband. Their privileged world makes them easy prey for a con artist who mysteriously shows up at their front door-injured and bleeding-claiming to be Sidney Poitier’s son and a close college friend of their Ivy League children.
The Flagler production stars Caulene Hudson as Ouisa, Micah Laird as Flan and Nick Khan as Paul, the con-artist who charms his way into many upper-crust homes along the Upper East Side with his wit and insider knowledge.
“I think it’s a script that will leave the viewer thinking,” said director Britton Corry, of the play that premiered in 1990. “In this country, most of us are not what we might wish other to think we are, but even though we may see ourselves as being worlds apart from many people, there are only six degrees of separation.”
Show times for “Six Degrees of Separation” will be at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 19-20 and 26-27 with 2 p.m. matinees Oct. 21 and 28. Tickets are $15 and are available from noon-5 p.m. at the auditorium box office or one hour prior to curtain.

Siguenza awarded Hispanic Heritage Council scholarship

Rebeca Siguenza, a freshman at Flagler College, has been awarded a scholarship for $1,000 provided through the Hispanic Heritage Council of St. Johns County.
“I am so glad to have won the scholarship,” said Siguenza, who is studying business administration at Flagler. “I am always happy to help the Hispanic community when someone needs it.”
Siguenza was awarded the scholarship for her efforts in helping the Hispanic community in Saint Augustine by volunteering her time as a translator for many families in the area.
The Hispanic Heritage Council of St. Johns County is an organization designed to benefit the Hispanic community and preserve its heritage through arts, education and community awareness, through partnerships with local high schools, community colleges, universities and businesses. The HHC is currently working to create a scholarship for Flagler students.

Flagler comes in at 11 on U.S. News “Best Colleges” list

Flagler College ranks 11th in the South for Best Regional Colleges according to U.S. News and World Report’s new 2013 edition
of “Best Colleges.” The widely used college guide includes rankings on more than 1,600 schools nationwide.

The guidebook will be available on newsstands Sept. 18.
The Best Regional Colleges category includes schools whose focus is almost entirely on the undergraduate experience and who offer a broad range of programs in the liberal arts, as well as fields such as business, nursing and education. The 370 colleges in the category draw heavily from nearby states and are divided into four regions.
Flagler was also named an “A-Plus School for B Students” based on its proportion of accepted students who had B-level grades but were admitted based on “spirit and hard work,” according to the U.S. News and World Report.
The Best Colleges guide compares the quality of schools based on “indicators of excellence” such as freshman retention, graduation rates and the strength of the faculty. Colleges and universities are sorted into categories that the publication bases on the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education.
In August, Flagler was also included in the Princeton Review’s annual college guide, “Best 377 Colleges – 2013 Edition.”
