Occupy Denver to protest police violence Sunday

In solidarity with cities across The United States, Occupy Denver is calling for a solidarity march in response to the massive violence and repression of residents in Anaheim California. Time and time again the justice system turns a blind eye to the violence committed by the state, whether it is someone tortured in a jail cell, beaten on a sidewalk, or in this case; shot in the back. Many accept the fact that the men in badges who shake us down for traffic tickets, harass communities of color, and preserve the status quo of the ruling class are out there preserving some sort of moral order. This is not a moral order, for no moral order attacks people seeking to have their grievances redressed. It was not a moral order that attacked with batons, fired bean bag rounds and rubber bullets at children in Anaheim this week. We call on everyone in Denver who is fed up with police murders & state repression to take the streets with us. We will honor the souls that were lost in Anaheim, and remember those who have befallen the same fate in Denver. At 4PM We will rally at the Denver Skate Park at 2205 19th Street, between Platte Street and Little Raven in Denver and depart at 4:30. Police in the California city of Anaheim are facing allegations of murder and brutality after fatally shooting two Latino men over the weekend and firing rubber bullets at crowds of protesters. On Saturday, Anaheim police shot and killed 24-year-old Manuel Diaz after he reportedly ran away from a group of officers who confronted him in the street. Diaz was unarmed. Hours after his death, a chaotic scene broke out when police fired rubber bullets and tear gas at a crowd of local residents protesting the shooting. Another Latino resident, Joel Acevedo, was shot dead by police the following day. Police say Acevedo was suspected in a car robbery, but the circumstances around his death remain unconfirmed. We discuss the situation in Anaheim with Gustavo Arellano, editor of the alternative newspaper, OC Weekly, and Theresa Smith, who has worked with families to call for police accountability in Anaheim since 2009, when officers shot and killed her son, Cesar Cruz, a 35-year-old father of five. “Given the fact that this is the eighth officer-involved shooting within one year in the city of Anaheim … the community is going to be very upset,” Arellano says. “There’s a lot of angry residents, and rightfully so.”
North West Burglaries and Arson in St. Johns County

Detectives with the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office continue to investigate a series of crimes that occurred in the North West District of the county within the past several months. Detectives received tips from the community and were able to ascertain that three adults and two teens were involved in several burglaries and arson.
A witness learned of one of the incidents through Facebook and notified the Sheriff’s Office that she saw a vehicle traveling in Jacksonville with music equipment that matched items allegedly stolen from a St. Johns County School.
As detectives followed up on the tip, they began working with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office in an attempt to locate the vehicle and property. The suspect vehicle was located on Race Track Road, where deputies conducted a traffic stop. Upon stopping the vehicle, the driver told deputies he was on probation and he did not want to go to jail. As deputies spoke with the driver, they were able to see several items in plain view inside the vehicle, which they recognized as possible items stolen during the recent burglaries.
Detectives continued to identify and interview additional suspects in this case based on the roadside investigation. Today, three of the suspects were arrested on charges relating to a burglary at Cunningham Creek Elementary School on June 28, 2012. Additionally, information was obtained regarding two of the suspects’ involvement in the arson of two buses at local daycare on June 12, 2012, totaling in $74,000 worth of damage.
The suspects are identified as Shane Michael Havlik, 16, 860 Brookstone Court St. Johns, FL (arrested and charged with burglary theft, trespass, dealing in stolen property and criminal mischief); Montgomery Sinclair McCaffrey, 18, 104 Findhorn Court St. Johns, FL (arrested and charged with accessory after the fact and trespassing); Samuel Lee Maxey, 15, 200 Leese Drive St. Johns, FL (arrested and charged with accessory after the fact and trespassing). Charges have been filed against the two suspects identified in the arson.

Floridians select St. Augustine as their favorite city

“Just ask a local.” That phrase is widely accepted as the best advice anyone can offer with regard to finding the true story of a destination. So that’s exactly what Public Policy Polling did earlier this month. Renowned for their work in political polling and their ability to pick the “winners,” the folks at Public Policy Polling decided to survey Floridians to determine which city in the Sunshine State was their favorite – and which city they most disliked.
The survey of 642 voters representing all of the state’s geographic regions, ages, political affiliations and races showed that St. Augustine was their favorite Florida city. Although the results may not have been surprising, the margin of victory for the Oldest City was impressive. For example, it was “leagues ahead of the home of Disney World, Orlando” which finished second. In fact, St. Augustine was viewed favorably by 76 percent of the respondents and seen negatively by only five percent. Orlando got a 64 percent favorable and a 13 percent negative. Next came Tampa with a 61 percent favorable and 13 percent unfavorable, followed by Key West which received a 60 percent favorability rating and 12 percent who weren’t that thrilled with the city. Which city finished last? Miami had a 36 percent favorable rating, while 35 percent of Floridians viewed the city negatively.
It is important to note that no one paid Public Policy Polling to conduct the survey. They just wanted to find out what the results would be if they “just asked a local.” Needless to say, when residents of Florida’s Historic Coast are asked their opinion of the survey, the answer is: 100 percent favorable!
