National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba – free concert November 4

As part of its first tour of the United States since the Castro Revolution, The National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba will perform a free, non-ticketed concert at 4 p.m. on Sunday, November 4 at the St. Augustine Amphitheatre, 1340 A1A South. The orchestra’s performance will be presented as a gift to the City of St. Augustine and St. Johns County from the University of Florida and its partnering organizations. This classical presentation will signify the launch of a three-year cultural collaboration that will acknowledge the 500th Anniversary of the landing of Juan Ponce de León in 2013; the 50th Anniversary of the Civil Rights Act in 2014; and the St. Augustine 450th Commemoration in 2015. For more than 50 years, the National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba has been instrumental in introducing Cuban and Latin American music to the international classical music community. The presentation, which will include the Cuban Overture as well as compositions by Beethoven, Gershwin, and Lecuona is open to the public on a first-come, first-served basis. Flavors Top Chef Cook-Off, A Benefit For Home Again St. Johns Is This Friday

Flavors of Florida’s Historic Coast Top Chef Cook-Off will take place Friday, October 12 in the Atrium at the beautiful Renaissance World Golf Resort, Convention Center and Beach Club, from 5 to 7 p.m. The competition will feature more than a dozen chefs conjuring up their signature dishes for a panel of celebrity judges who will select the Best of the Best. In addition, everyone in attendance will sample the prix fixe dinners featured by Flavors participating restaurants in October. Ballots submitted by attendees will determine the Flavors People’s Choice Award! Sponsored by the Renaissance World Golf Resort and The St. Augustine, Ponte Vedra & The Beaches Visitors and Convention Bureau, proceeds from the event will support Home Again St. Johns, the primary organization responsible for meeting the needs of the homeless in St. Johns County.
Advance tickets for Flavors Top Chef Cook-Off are available online for $20 at www.HistoricCoastFlavors.com. Tickets are also available at the door for $25 per person.
First Coast News Weekend Anchor, Jessica Clark will emcee the Flavors Top Chef Cook-Off. Celebrity judges will be Chef David Bearl, Member of the American Culinary Federation and the Director of College Advancement at the First Coast Technical Institute; Phil Amato, Anchor and Host of Good Morning Jacksonville on WTLV; Jody Sutton, Director of Community Relations at World Golf Hall of Fame; and David Mariotti, Chairman of the VCB Board of Directors and General Manager, The Lodge & Club at Ponte Vedra Beach.

October is here and chefs on Florida’s Historic Coast are making culinary history with signature dishes featuring local favorites and heritage-inspired flavors. Called Flavors of Florida’s Historic Coast, this special program offers unique, delicious and affordably-priced dining choices. Nearly 20 outstanding restaurants are featuring a prix fixe (fixed price) three-course dinner that will showcase their chef’s best culinary skills. Great food, paired with a wide variety of lodging options and enticing cultural events make October an ideal time to experience the history, romance and charm of St. Augustine, Ponte Vedra and the Beaches.
A part of the Spanish Empire for far longer than it has been included in the United States, Florida’s Historic Coast offers a unique culinary heritage resulting from a centuries-old cultural diversity that continues today. Spanish roots, spiced with Minorcan flair and blended with the very best in traditional Southern coastal cuisine create a palate-pleasing culinary collection that intrigues and pleases both “foodies” and folks who simply want to enjoy a memorable meal in a beautiful locale.
In addition to the tantalizing daily creations offered by participating restaurants, The Flavors Top Chef Cook-Off, a benefit for Home Again St. Johns, is set for October 12 at the beautiful Renaissance Resort World Golf Village Resort. And, while dining in any one of the participating Flavors Restaurants during October 7 – 12, $1 from each order off the Flavors menu will go toward supporting the work of Home Again St. Johns.
