Jong Hwa Won, a senior at Flagler College, has been selected to receive a $2,400 UPS Scholarship provided through the Florida Independent College Fund (FICF).

The Florida Independent College Fund is a statewide association for private colleges and universities that is affiliated with the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC). At the national level, CIC teams up with the UPS Foundation to distribute funding of the UPS Scholarship. This year, CIC awarded nearly $1.5 million in scholarships from its UPS Educational Endowment Fund to private institutions of higher learning across the nation, including a grant of $74,400 to FICF. These scholarships are awarded on the basis of the students’ academic achievement and financial need.

“In 2011, The UPS Foundation and UPS employees directed $93.5 million in philanthropy and in-kind services, including more than 1.6 million hours of volunteer service, to the local communities in which we operate,” said Eduardo Martinez, president of The UPS Foundation. “UPS is proud to continue that spirit of giving by partnering with CIC to support thousands of students working to become the leaders of tomorrow by obtaining an education from our nation’s private colleges.”

The UPS Scholarships are funded by the CIC-UPS Educational Endowment Fund, which is held and administered by CIC. Since its inception, this Fund has generated nearly $49 million in scholarship aid to support more than 17,000 students.

Two lead organizations working on two very significant upcoming commemorations will meet together in St. Augustine to advance the planning for both events.

Viva Florida 500 will hold a statewide summit in preparation for the 500th anniversary of the founding of Florida by Juan Ponce de Leon in 1513 jointly with the St. Augustine 450th Commemoration on October 1 at Flagler College’s Lewis Auditorium. The event is open to the public and will run from10:00am until 3:00pm with a break for lunch.

Lt. Governor Jennifer Carroll, Secretary of State Ken Detzner, former UN Ambassador Andrew Young and State Senator John Thrasher are among the more than 20 speakers lined up for the morning and afternoon sessions. Joining them will be representatives of the governments of Spain, Britain and France, the Seminole Tribe of Florida, Florida’s Department of State, and the Florida Humanities Council.

The program will feature a morning session focused on leadership with officials and dignitaries speaking, and an afternoon session focused on resources with speakers from Visit Florida, Florida universities, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection/Division of Recreation and Parks, and other organizations, all designed to assist organizations in the development and marketing of 500th and 450th events.
