Jim Grant (Robert Redford) is a public interest lawyer and single father raising his daughter in the tranquil suburbs of Albany, New York. Grant’s world is turned upside down,when a brash young reporter named Ben Shepard (Shia LaBeouf) exposes his true identity as a former 1970s antiwar radical fugitive wanted for murder. After living for more than 30 years underground, Grant must now go on the run. With the FBI in hot pursuit, he sets off on a cross-country journey to track down the one person that can clear his name.
Shepard knows the significance of the national news story he has exposed and, for a journalist, this is an opportunity of a lifetime. Hell-bent on making a name for himself, he is willing to stop at nothing to capitalize on it. He digs deep into Grant’s past. With the FBI closing in, Shepard uncovers the shocking secrets Grant has been keeping for the past three decades. As Grant and Shepard come face to face in the wilderness of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, they each must come to terms with who they really are.

In the new era of politics where many backers support their candidate like a rabid sports fan, an election can be, as U.S News & World Report White House correspondent Ken Walsh
says, “interesting.”

“Watching a campaign when the country is this polarized is something,” said Walsh who will speak at Flagler College on Oct. 9 as part of the 2012 Forums on Government and Public Policy lecture series.
“We’ve been polarized as a nation for quite a long time but the hardening of the sides seems to be even greater,” said Walsh, whose lecture topic is “Election 2012: Continuity or Change?” “The new normal of American politics is stalemate, gridlock and no compromise.”
Walsh is no stranger to American politics. He joined the U.S. News & World Report in 1984 as a congressional correspondent and has covered the presidency, presidential campaigns and national politics since 1986. He is also the author of “The Presidency” column and writer of a daily blog called “Ken Walsh’s Washington” at usnews.com.
In 2012, Walsh believes Obama’s platform of looking towards the future will be a bit tougher to swallow than it was in 2008.
“Obama took the approach of hope and change in 2008 but that turned out to be much more difficult than he expected,” said Walsh. “In 2012, people seem much more cynical and I believe turnout will be much less than 2008 so it will be interesting to see what happens.”

Flagler College will hold a ceremony of life for Victor Ostrowidzki on Oct. 10 from 4-5 p.m. Ostrowidzki,
the College’s director of the Forum on Government and Public Policy and longtime professor died on April 7 after battling melanoma.

Among the confirmed speakers are Doctor Keith Justice, current Forum director Jim Toedtman, associate professor Arthur Vanden Houten and College president William T. Abare. Jr.
Ostrowidzki, 80, was a veteran journalist who had served as a White House reporter during the Reagan administration and covered health-care issues in the Clinton era. He also reported on every presidential election from 1964-1988.
He joined the faculty of Flagler College in 1997, and went on to found the Forum on Government and Public Policy, which brings in journalists and other experts to speak about current issues. The Forum has brought to the college names such as Robert Novak, David Broder, Joe Klein, Anne Coulter, Pat Buchanan and Chris Matthews.
Ostrowidzki taught Campaigns and Elections for the Humanities department and Media Power in Politics for Communication.
The ceremony will take place in the Virginia Room of the Ringhaver Student Center, 50 Sevilla St., with a reception immediately to follow in Markland House, 102 King St.

With November inching closer, the 2012 election race is beginning to reach its boiling point.
Mark Silva, deputy managing editor for government news at Bloomberg News
in Washington, believes the race may come down to the wire with states such as Florida being the decision makers.
“Florida’s long-fought 2000 election is what decided that election,” said Silva, who will kick off Flagler College’s 2012 Forums on Government and Public Policy lecture series at 7 p.m. on Sept. 11 in the Lewis Auditorium at Flagler College. “Florida again will be among a handful of states that determine the outcome this year.”
The topic of Silva’s talk will be “Election 2012: Too Close to Call?”
At Bloomberg since 2010, Silva oversees a team of reporters and editors covering the White House, Congress and the 2012 election campaign, as well as other agencies such as State, Defense, Justice and the Supreme Court.
According to Silva, the upcoming election will be close despite playing out against the backdrop of a struggling economy and more than three years of unemployment running at over 8 percent.
“Presidents have not typically been reelected in modern times with that much unemployment,” said Silva. “Yet President Barack Obama enjoys a high degree of personal popularity — the public’s favorable view of him exceeding the job approval ratings he gets. At the same time, Romney is a disciplined and also well-financed candidate backed by super-PACs whose fundraising and TV ads have enabled the Republicans to go toe-to-toe with Obama on the air.”
And while Silva believes that economic factors and demographics across the country will play a part in who wins the 2012 election, it will be the voters in swing states such as Florida that will make the difference.
“Florida is a true swing state,” said Silva. “They voted for Obama in 2008, George W. Bush twice, Bill Clinton for reelection in 1996 but not election in 1992, George H.W. Bush twice, Ronald Reagan twice, Jimmy Carter once, but not for reelection.”
Silva says voters should also keep an eye on North Carolina, Virginia, Colorado, Nevada and Ohio.
“The economy is better in Ohio than it is nationally, and even in Florida, which has suffered among the worst
in the collapse of the housing market, the economy has shown signs of improvement,” said Silva. “Ultimately, the way voters feel about their own economy in these swing states, and what they’ve decided about all this negative TV advertising, will determine who wins the White House.”
