County soliciting Walden Ponds sculpture proposals
Jul 1st
Boulder County, Colo. – Boulder County Parks and Open Space is soliciting design submittals for original sculptures to be placed at the entry to Walden Ponds Wildlife Habitat.
The artwork shall include sculptures and a sign indicating “Walden Ponds Wildlife Habitat” to be installed on stone pedestals. See the sketch and photo for details on the entry monument concept. Artists are to submit up to three drawings of their proposed artwork including material specifications. Only original work will be considered.
Inspiration for the artwork should be drawn from the plants and animals on the site. Some species particular to the site include: Willow, Cattails, Cottonwood, Belted Kingfisher, Redwing Blackbird, Western Meadowlark and Blue Heron.
The project budget is limited to $3,500, including design, fabrication, transportation and delivery. Boulder County will handle installation with direction from the artist if necessary. Proposals are due by Friday, July 15 and shall be submitted to Emily Greenwood at egreenwood@bouldercounty.org. Contact Greenwood at 303-678-6369 or via email for more information.
The Walden Ponds site functioned as a gravel mine from 1958 until 1974, when Boulder County began converting the pits into a series of ponds. The shores were planted with native plants and the ponds were allowed to fill with groundwater and stocked with fish. The site has since become an excellent wildlife habitat and one of the best riparian bird watching areas in Boulder County.

What: Community meeting for residents to provide input on operations at the Nederland Area Community Forestry Sort Yard
When: Tuesday, July 12, 7 p.m.

The second part of the meeting will focus on gathering public feedback about how the first year of operations went for residents in the Nederland community.
No RSVP is needed to attend. Community members may email comments and suggestions prior to the meeting to pinebeetle@bouldercounty.org.
The Community Forestry Sort Yard program was established by Boulder County to help landowners fight bark beetle infestations, create better defensible space around homes and communities and to help create healthier forest conditions in the foothills of the county. Two sort yard locations are open each summer on a rotating schedule to provide residents a convenient free of charge location to dispose of logs and slash cut from their land.
For more information about the program, bark beetle management or general questions backyard forest management, contact Boulder County Outreach Forester Ryan Ludlow at 720-564-2641 or pinebeetle@bouldercounty.org.
July 4 emergency warning siren tests canceled
Jun 28th
The decision was made to limit disruption of community events taking place throughout the day on July 4, as well as to avoid potential confusion the sirens might cause visitors who are unfamiliar with the county’s outdoor warning system.
Siren testing regularly takes place on the first Monday of each month at 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. from April through August.
In addition to conducting the audible tests on the first Monday of each month during peak flood season, Boulder County recently acquired software that silently tests the sirens on a weekly basis to ensure that all aspects of the sirens are working properly.
The City of Longmont’s system is independent of Boulder County’s, and Longmont will conduct an audible test as previously scheduled.
About the countywide alert system
Used to alert residents to potential danger from a flood or other immediate threat, there are more than 30 outdoor warning sirens in place across Boulder County, including in Boulder, Erie, Jamestown, Lafayette, Longmont, Louisville (does not do audible testing), Lyons, Marshall, Eldorado Springs, Superior and the University of Colorado at Boulder.
