Valmont Bike Park and the Chautauqua Park playground are closed to the public until further notice, due to required maintenance caused by the recent winter storm and a cyclocross race at Valmont Bike Park.

Tree limb damage at both parks and poor trail conditions at Valmont Bike Park are scheduled to be repaired by Parks and Recreation staff over the next several days. Valmont Bike Park will also be closed to the public due to the Boulder Cup CycloCross race on Sunday, Oct. 30.

Boulder police investigating early morning homicide

At approximately 1:20 a.m. today, Friday, Oct. 28, Boulder police responded to a 911 call that was traced to the 3100 block of Pearl Street.  The caller told dispatch that he had been stabbed and the suspect was still on scene.  Officers arrived on scene to find two stabbing victims in what appeared to be an abandoned shed being used as shelter.  Both victims were transported to Boulder Community Hospital, one with life-threatening injuries.  At approximately 9:45 a.m., police learned that this victim had died in surgery. The second victim is still being treated at BCH. The suspect was arrested on-scene and is currently at the Boulder County Jail.

Both of the victims and the suspect are homeless.  Both victims are white males. One is in his late 20s. The homicide victim has not yet been identified. The suspect has been identified as Charles Waters, date of birth 9/14/55.  Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack.

“The homeless often face dangers most of us do not have to worry about, and this is just another tragic example,” said Police Chief Mark Beckner. “There is no tolerance in our community for this sort of senseless violence.  We are doing everything we can to build a solid case for prosecution.”

Public invited to tour proposed prairie dog relocation site (Nov. 1)

The Boulder County Parks and Open Space will hold a public tour of a proposed prairie dog relocation site at Rabbit Mountain Open Space from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 1.

Wildlife biologists and rangers will meet the public at the Rabbit Mountain trailhead on North 53rd Street (north of Hwy 66) at 4 p.m. Vans will shuttle everyone to the proposed relocation site.

The department has submitted an application to the Colorado Division of Wildlife proposing to relocate prairie dogs from a county-owned agricultural property in the Longmont area to Rabbit Mountain sometime between Nov. 14 and Dec. 2.

Prior to issuing a permit, the Colorado Division of Wildlife is reviewing the proposal which includes a site assessment, evaluating a management plan submitted for the receiving site, and reviewing all public comments.

For those unable to attend the tour, written comments can be emailed to wildlife@bouldercounty.org. The deadline for written comments is Nov. 3.

For further information about this public tour, contact Education & Outreach Coordinator Pascale Fried at pfried@bouldercounty.org or 303-678-6201.
