“In a World…” Is Too Amateurish

“Too Amateurish”
“Hotshots” looks at a movie!
In a World… takes its title from the opening words made famous by legendary voiceover artist Don LaFontaine from the many promos and movie previews he recorded in Hollywood.
Lake Bell wrote, directed, and stars as Carol Solomon in this film about the voiceover industry in Hollywood, which we are told is sexist, in that very few women are used as voiceover artists.
Now, we know how Hollywood likes to make movies about itself, but if most of those self-absorbed movies are about as interesting as insiders inspecting their own belly buttons, this one about an aspect of Hollywood that is less known than making films themselves is, could be dismissed as being so self-absorbed and self-indulgent that it is as interesting as insiders inspecting their belly buttons and their toes for toe jam.
However, it does contain some subplots that are intended to make the film more interesting, such as the lousy way that Carol’s father treats her and her older sister, Danielle.
For example, at the beginning of the movie Carol is living at home with her widowed father, who comes home one day and tells Carol, “Jamie is going to be moving in, you’re going to have to find another place to live.”
Jamie is Sam’s girlfriend, and she is the stereotypical dumb blonde bimbo, a character included in movies written by lazy writers to get some cheap laughs.
So, Carol, who makes her living as a vocal coach, moves in with her sister, who works as a concierge at a fancy hotel.
However, Carol would like to break into the voiceover business, where Sam is well known and respected as a voiceover artist.
A search is on for a voiceover artist to record the promos for an upcoming series of films known as The Amazon Games, and Carol would like to get that gig, knowing that her father desperately wants that job himself.
Then there are other subplots involving Louis, an engineer at the recording studio where Carol works, who would like to go out with Carol, but he is too shy to ask, and a guest at the hotel where Danielle works is interested in Danielle, which causes problems in Danielle’s personal life.
The main plot and all the subplots are like belly buttons and toe jam.
In a World… is too amateurish.

The Fall 2013 Flagler College Community Lecture Series begins on Sept. 17
Aug 28th
Flagler College Art Professor Catherine McFarland will discuss the Aesthetic Movement of the 19th century, placing the National Historic Landmark in the historical context of the movement.
The Aesthetic Movement is an art movement supporting the emphasis of aesthetic values more than social-political themes.
“John Ruskin, the art historian, critic and philosopher, was the inspiration for this hugely important movement,” said McFarland. “We teach Ruskin at Flagler College, partly because of his influence on the aesthetics of the old hotel.”
McFarland’s lecture, “The Aesthetic Movement in America,” will feature approximately 60 images, including some pre-Raphaelite paintings, and will include anecdotes about the artists and writers.
Professor McFarland earned an M.A. in Art History from Emory University and a B.A. in Art History from Smith College. She received studio instruction in painting, sculpture, printmaking, design and photography from Atlanta College of Art and has completed post-graduate work at Emory University.
In honor of the 125th anniversary of the former Hotel Ponce de Leon, the 2013 Community Lecture Series is focused on “The Hotel Ponce de Leon Deconstructed: Building the Future for Modern America.”
The series features a lineup of historians and scholars discussing Henry Flagler’s vision for St. Augustine, social classes and American politics during the late 19th century, and the influence of art, music and literature during the Gilded Age.
Tickets to the lecture are $5 per person. Active military personnel may attend at no charge. Lectures begin at 10 a.m. in the Flagler Room at Flagler College, 74 King St. The lecture will last approximately one hour and will be followed by a coffee and pastry reception.
This year, thanks to VISIT FLORIDA’s Cultural Heritage and Nature Tourism Grant Program, Flagler College is offering complimentary admission to the fall 2013 Flagler College Community Lecture Series for any St. Johns County tourism employee. Tourism employees interested in attending the lecture will need to present their employee name tag or ID at the lecture series registration table.
Reservations for the lecture series are required due to limited space. Call (904) 819-6282 for reservations or more information. To watch a live stream of these lectures, visit ustream.tv/channel/community-lecture-series.

Information on venues and musicians sought for Mumford and Sons
Aug 28th
It’s no secret that St. Augustine has a rich heritage of musical entertainment and a vibrant arts community. In fact, it was that aspect of the Nation’s Oldest City that in large part attracted the promoters of the Mumford and Sons to select St. Augustine as one of the few locations for the Gentlemen of the Road Stopover, September 13 and 14.
Because of the worldwide popularity of Mumford and Sons, it is certain that an international spotlight will shine on St. Augustine during the event’s two days, so local organizers are working to showcase these unique aspects of this unique city by promoting local musicians and the venues in which they perform.
Venues both downtown and in the beach communities will be promoted through the event’s primary website, www.GOTRstaug.com, to the thousands who will be St. Augustine for the event, for while the main Gentlemen of the Road event will take place on Francis Field, musically St. Augustine has something to offer everyone.
Performers and operators of live music venues throughout the area are encouraged to share information regarding activities scheduled for anytime from Thursday, September 12 through Sunday, September 15 for including in the promotions.
Contact Elizabeth Glasgow at eglasgow@sjcfl.us or 904.209.3753, and share activity details, including date(s), time, location and a brief description for inclusion in the entertainment guide.
