Fort. Fourth. Fireworks. This is a no brainer!
Jul 2nd
Have a blast at one of the East Coast’s largest fireworks displays! The spectacular fireworks burst above the ancient Castillo de San Marcos and reflect in the waters of the Matanzas Bay. Admission is free with the best vantage points located along the bayfront between the Castillo and the Bridge of Lions. The fireworks blast off at 9:30 p.m.
Fireworks Over The Matanzas, St. Augustine’s annual Independence Day fireworks display, draws the largest single-event audience in the city’s very busy calendar year. While an exact count of all who see Fireworks Over The Matanzas is not possible, 100,000+ is not unrealistic considering that the show is watched from a 360° vantage point, including the Bridge of Lions, the Bayfront and the Castillo grounds; the grounds of the Mission Nombre de Dios; the Vilano Boat Ramp park; and Porpoise Point and Davis Shores.
The city’s web site, www.staugustinegovernment.com, has the information you and your audience need to make the most out of this grand event, including a schedule and description of the program, and details of road closures and detours with map-links to the city’s public parking facility and other locations. The primary story is available here: www.fireworksoverthematanzas.com.
Additionally, the site carries a reminder, available here, from city fire officials to keep the holiday safe and legal in particular as regards to the possession or use of personal fireworks. That story also includes an audio link to an interview on the same topic with John Rayno, City Fire Marshal from this week’s The Break Room.
Lastly, there’s a reminder that City of St. Augustine offices will be closed on July 4, but solid waste collection schedules will remain unchanged.

“Chronicle” Is a Total Waste

“What a Waste”
“Hotshots” looks at a movie!
Chronicle is another one of those movies in which the gimmick is that the audience sees what the characters in the movie have recorded themselves with a camera, and yet we see footage from more than one camera and even footage from surveillance cameras, as well.
Right. What is the point of the gimmick, especially when such extraordinary lengths have to be taken to be able to show the person behind the camera, like, for example, when he is flying up in the air high enough to almost get hit by a passing airliner?
At the beginning of the movie, we meet Andrew, a high-school senior, and he establishes the gimmick when he sets up a camera on a tripod in his bedroom and then says to his drunken father outside the door, “I bought a camera, and I’m filming everything from here on out.”
Andrew takes the camera to school with him and keeps it recording while he is eating lunch by himself on the bleachers at the football field, and we see him creep out the cheerleaders who are practicing their routines and also see him get picked on by bullies.
Now, any intelligent person in the audience is going to figure out that this is going to play a part later in the movie. You guess which one.
Andrew has a cousin named Matt, and Matt tells Andrew not to take his camera with them when they go to a party together, but naturally Andrew doesn’t listen.
While they are at the party, Matt and another friend of theirs named Steve find something out in the woods, and they tell Andrew to come out and get it on tape.
It is a large hole with a loud unusual noise coming up out of it, Steve falls in the hole, and Matt and Andrew, who keeps the camera with him, of course, go down into the hole after Steve.
We don’t see what is in the hole, and the movie cuts to a different day when we see that the three boys have unusual powers that they are trying out and practicing, powers that allow them to manipulate objects with just their minds, and they learn that they can increase their abilities with practice.
So, do they do good or evil?
Chronicle is a total waste.

“Crazy, Stupid, Love.” Stupid, Pointless, Waste

“Stupid, Pointless, Waste.”
“Hotshots” looks at a movie!
Crazy, Stupid, Love. has too many characters and too many love stories to be classified as having a plot about a “love triangle.”
No, call this one as being about a “love octagon,” and not all of the love stories are pleasant and tasteful.
Here are the characters: Steve Carell and Julianne Moore are Cal and Emily Weaver. They have been married 25 years, have three children, and Emily wants a divorce, because she hs been having an affair with David, a man she works with, who is played by Kevin Bacon.
Ryan Gosling is Jacob, a studly do-wrong who picks up any woman he wants in a bar every night of the week and takes her home for a one-night stand.
Emma Stone is Hannah, a young lawyer who is rejected by the man she is interested in and then sets her sights on Jacob, but she refuses to play his game and forces him to play her game.
Jonah Bobo is Robbie Weaver, the 13-year-old son of Cal and Emily, and he has a major crush on his babysitter, Jessica, played by Analeigh Tipton, but she is 17 years old, and she has a crush on an older man, who is also married.
And, finally, Marisa Tomei is Kate, Robbie’s eighth-grade English teacher who is also out in the dating scene and figures into the stories, too.
So, when Cal moves out of the house and gets his own apartment, he starts going to a bar to pick up women, but his pick-up line leaves something to be desired. He says to one woman, “My wife is having intercourse with someone who is not me.”
Jacob sees Cal, takes pity on him, and decides to mentor Cal in the ways of picking up women in a bar, as well as helping Cal to make other changes in his life-style.
However, Cal still has feelings for Emily and goes over to the house in the middle of the night to take care of the yard and garden without Emily’s knowing that he is doing so.
Meanwhile, Robbie keeps pestering Jessica about his love for her, and she keeps rejecting him, not only because of his youth, but also because of her desire for that older man.
Crazy, Stupid, Love. is just a stupid, pointless, waste.
