Jann Scott’s Journal is the story and life of Boulder Icon and talk host Jann Scott. He has been in print, on radio and on TV in Boulder since 1989. Some consider him the voice of Boulder’s soul.

The Colorado state Legislature is all cranked up this week over gun control. What ever laws they pass won’t change a thing. Unless they move AR-19s, AK 47s and all military type weapon into a special permit category nothing will change. That special permit category is reserved for collectors of military weapons.

Semi- auto handguns of course are a giant problem. All of the Glocks andf Berettas put out as much fire power as an assault weapon. Twenty years ago I had a Denver police officer tell me on my radio show. “We are out gunned on the street. You have criminals walking around with with semi auto Glock 9 millimeter”

And of course crazy people like James Holmes and Klebolt and Harris have readily gotten their hands on military weapons. What are we going to do about them.

Here are a few solutions:

1. Pass a law that anyone who purchases a hand gun or rifle must go through a gun safety glass with every purchase. Make this mandatory in Colorado.

2. Open a public shooting range in Boulder with a shoot master where these classes are given.

The above two will teach safety first and respect for fire arms.

Now on the issue of guns on the CU campus. I thinks women should be allowed to carry guns on campus but not men. That will end sex assault and see a few cases of men with their balls shot off. but it’s a nice message.

If Boulder wasn’t the hippie drug capitol of the world before, it certainly is now. And we are the laughing stock of the nation. Besides decriminalizing pot possession Boulder has open drug sales to anyone with cash.
As I predicted two years ago, teen drug abuse would sky rocket as a result and that is exactly what has happened. Why because drugs are addictive and law makers are stupid.
You would think that there would be a 100% tax on pot to pay for an new teen rehab center to stem the mayhem caused by drugs.

well that’s it from our happy little bubble here in the Rockies

This has been an interesting week. All of the bulbs are 3 weeks early this spring so my crocus are up. Tulips and daffodils are on the way, too. And there were honey bees out today too. The winter here in Colorado has been mostly warm with temps in the 50’s and 60’s now 70’s.

The week started out with an “old lady” at the front desk of the local nursing home yelling at one of our reps over my TV show. Then we got written apologies. The driver of the rental car van recognized me from TV and radio so we had a nice chat about talk radio. Last night another fan came up to me outside a coffee shop and heaped more praise on Boulder channel 1 and me.

This morning I awoke with laryngitis so I haven’t been able to talk all day. so I yelled at a PR person in an email for jerking me around and wasting my time. They were offended and demanded that I apologize. so now I have to call that person and :”oh bla bla bla I didn’t really mean to say that you wasted my fucking time you cheap bastard” No I didn’t say that. I’m sick with a cold.

Motor racing has never been safe for the drivers or spectators.  The fiery crashes have been horrendous over the last 100 years.

Improvements have been made to protect the drivers, but as was evidenced by today’s Daytona fiery crash into the grandstands, spectators are at serious risk at every race track in the world. The catch fence at Daytona Speedway did not work. It did not keep fiery hot debris from going  2 story’s into the second tier of seats. 28 people were injured today and it is a miracle that the entire car with a load of high octane fuel did not go into the stands and kill hundreds of people. It has happened before and it will happen again. In fact every year race cars crash into grand stands and kill spectators. It happens at short tracks all over America. It happens at the road courses in Europe . It happens at off road rallies. It happens at drag races, F1 races and Indy car races. It happens at boat races and motorcycle races, It happens a lot.

The racing industry tries to suppress news stories covering these disasters, but it spilled out all over CNN today.  Travelling at over 200 miles per hour it is easy for an Indy car, Nascar or drag race car to be launched into the stands and kill people. It happens. The big lie is that it does not happen or that race promoters care about their fan base. They don’t.

All of these race tracks are not safe. Will it take a major catastrophe for the feds to step in and set safety regs ?? probably.

Nascar in particular sets races where there is the maximum danger to drivers and fans. They pack thousands of people close to the speedway where a car could fly into the stands and explode.  They create races that at extremely high speeds  with cars packed together which ensures that they will have multiple big wrecks.

The races are designed for big screen TVs  with millions of home viewers. Crashes  are the high point of every race. Auto racing has become enormously popular and is a blood and fire sport. It’s not about the racing. It is about the disaster that takes place on your TV every Sunday.

I call for a federal investigation into all motor sport events in America including the Indy 500, the NHRA, Nascar and SCCA. All of their race tracks and city road courses are flat out dangerous, unsafe and thoughtlessly constructed. It’s time.

Jann Scott’s Journal

Jann has driven and raced high speed race cars. He has seen spectators injured at races by flying debris.
