Abuse at Boulder Alano club
Sep 26th
Abuse Two homeless volunteers and hangers-on at this club target women and others, including me to harass. One of the men has a restraining order against him by a woman he assaulted. Both men have been arrested. What they do is wait for women or the elderly to come out of meetings and then target them for harassment. When anyone complains they are denied by the manager or Executive director. This is the behavior of the classic alcoholic family, but it began when the club reinvented itself and moved to a new location in 2018.
Cheated out of money At one point after I had reported abuse by homeless volunteers to Jame McFarland the manger he made a joke about it and then mentioned that I should renew my club dues 2 months early. Once he got my money , he threw me out of Boulder Alano Club for reporting crime.
Reports I reported all of these abuses multiple times to Sheila Paxton the executive director and James McFarland the club manager but they refused to do anything. They both denied any of it….. Even with witnesses and testimony…When I reported the problems to them and to Paul Whittle the ops manager of the club, he not only only denied it, he embraced the problems. Numerous people have reported abuse and harassment to club management and in every case they did nothing.
Famed Boulder attorney Dennis Blewett said that these “people are incompetent to run a nonprofit charity lat alone an A.A.Club They have no idea how to run it. They should be trained social workers. But they have caused a mess. What they should have done is talked to the harassers. But instead they did nothing and then they hurt the people being victimized.”
Jann Scott I have been a reporter most of my life. An investigator, a snoop, talk show host. When I start snooping around, asking questions and reporting, not everybody’s happy. Some people some groups become downright hostile such as the NRA, the ku Klux Klan the characters in The JonBenet Ramsey case and certain gangsters. So when I started looking into the operations of the Boulder Alano Club just before its first anniversary imagine their surprise? Their management staff was infuriated and threatened to call the police and threw me out of their Club…When people have that kind of reaction to my investigations I know generally that I’m on the right track and they have something to hide.
Here’s what I found out so far. The Meadows shopping center who Leases the space to Boulder Alano Club is concerned about the level of crime, smoking, needle use, and homeless who hangout at the club and they warned the club…The club had criminal activity and people being harassed which I reported
The Meadows shopping center has already had a problem with homeless alcoholics and drug addicts and now they have a place to congregate during the day in cold weather. Boulder has few resources for that population. While homeless advocates may be happy about it some of the upscale shopping center neighbors may not be and they’ve already started complaining.
Boulder Fire Marshal report that the club never registered with them. They had the space listed as vacant and not as a club. Fire Marshall found a host of violations which include fire extinguishers not managed, exit doors blocked, exit signs missing or broken no authorized occupancy capacity for various meeting rooms… The place is and was a firetrap waiting for a tragedy.
Boulder police report neighbor complaints about smoking, homeless addicts hanging out in front and back of the club.
Boulder District attorney told me he wants reports of abuse. The D.A.s office is especially concerned about elder abuse and abuse toward women. I am both older and disabled now and in recovery from surgeries so I have to be very careful about violent people who make a home out of places like Boulder Alano Club. What is shocking is that the club management itself targets the vulnerable.
Boulder County Health reports that the club holds event and serves food but does not monitor food temperatures and i’s a health concern such as their recent open stage night. The club also did not register with Boulder county health they had the facility listed as vacant.
Boulder criminal and civil rights attorney Dennis Blewett tells me that this non-profit charity operates like a private business, They’re breaking rules of nonprofits and breaking the rules of AA.
The club has a big celebration coming up in October and the fire marshal wants them to have a doorman and a counter to make sure that the facility is not overloaded with people. we shall see if they comply.
The board of directors all went into hiding since investigations began and removed their names from the website since they all have personal liability..
The Boulder fire marshal told me that” if there was a fire and a tragedy and someone injured trying to get out of the building that the club and board would be liable since they violated all of the fire Marshal’s code rules and laws.”
Meanwhile this club has pissed off a good portion of the AA community because they are selling art, running fundraisers, asking the public for donations and that the club is run by the rich for the rich and violates all of the AA traditions concerning individual self support
Some of the Young people in AA have started a boycott of the Boulder Alano Club because of its treatment of members. The club is actively recruiting them because they need their memberships to pay for the place but young people just don’t like it. They prefer downtown Church meetings at night. Where they all live and work.Boulder Alano Club is on the Eastern edge of Boulder in the suburbs and it exists for Rich ladies who lunch.
My spies on their board of directors tell me they are losing between 6 and $8,000 a month close to $80,000. a year. Though they have some rich benefactors most do not consider this a viable ethical AA Club.
Rule, Law and Tradition Violations They have consistently violated the anonymity tradition at the level of press. They had big stories in the Boulder Daily Camera featuring Sheila Paxton the ED. Paul Whittle a Boulder businessman wrote to me about his involvement with the club. Both dodged my questions and actually created lies to cover their tracks as did James McFarland their manager and janitor.
So now not only are people not joining this club, they have 141 members hardly enough to cover their costs, they need five or six hundred. They’ve created enough ill-will in the AA community that an exodus has begun. They’re referred to as Boulder Alano Club Refugees
I suppose in some sense here I am a whistle blower besides being a reporter and journalist. The club has banned me which I’ll take as a badge of honor for not keeping their secrets and telling the truth. They have warned people not to talk to me also a trust violation . They have even threatened me in a three page letter. All par for the course when I start digging around.
Attorney Denis Blewett said ” this club is a fascist state. It is not AA. It is a state run by the executive director and her board of yes men. but it is not AA. It is fascism and they need to change.

December Car buying on the web by Jann Scott
Nov 26th
The best deals come this time of the year when “Program cars” come back. Dealers snap them up at the dealer car auction in Denver every Monday. Program cars are LEASE and Fleet vehicles being turned back in. . Usually same year or 1 or two years old. This is also the time of the year when they come in. December is the slowest month of the year for car sales. Dealers have to clear everything out by January 1st to end the year; in order to get better bank rates for them(not you) and better order allotments from the manufactures.
The best place to find cars right now is on the web. Look for the specific car 2018, 17 or 16. Example I found my son a 2 year old program car at Boulder Toyota for $7000. We did a wide search and it popped up. It is not that we wanted to go to Boulder Toyota. they had what we were looking for. we did a search for a 2015 vehicle for $7000. We bought it that Day on Dec. 27th. They had to move it.
Is the dealer is your friend?
You have to work the numbers online. Car dealers are like strippers and prostitutes. You are the John. You think they love you.. lol… but when you leave the club , all of your money is gone.
Online car purchases and research is far more sophisticated. they can’t get into your head. and they are excellent at it,
I bought my 2016 VW Jetta in June 2016 for $15,800 (7000 under retail) from O’Meara VW on 104th. VW was pushing the cars out in the aftermath of the diesel scandal but the petro version is a perfectly good car and get 40 mph highway. But I did an online search.
do the Research online and buy a “program car”
If you want to buy an old car: ie 2015 or older, then forget it.. there are deals as in an actual deals.
How do I know all this. Among my many talents, I have been an automotive reviewer since 1969, a member of IMPA and RMAP and worked in the car industry for a period.
But with the interweb anybody can find the car they want for the price they need to pay… and have the dealers ship it here. or set the price with you online and then you go in and buy it. . good luck
the term Good Deal in the car business is synonymous with taking all of your money. don’t use it. Just work the number on line 🙂
(ps I worked for the Daily Camera and Colorado Daily in 2002 – 3 as their Auto Reviewer. They fired me for articles like this and Ford seriously threatened to suit me when I discovered a malfunction in the front wheel drive Saab turbo. a few years later Saab went broke.) ps I also reviewed cars on cable tv and online.

72 year old Boulder woman beaten getting off 308 bus N Broadway
Nov 16th
“Case Number 18-14541 Saturday night a 72 year old woman was getting off the bus headed north near her house at Iris and Broadway. She was slow to exit the bus. Then a Homeless women, “Angelia Marie Bowen, 4859 N Broadway, age 35, 5 2″ 115 1bs, brown hair , blue eyes”, waiting to get on the bus , pulled the woman down the stairs, and started to pummel her 8 to 12 times, stole her phone and fled. A good Samaritan in a car saw the whole incident and followed the homeless woman. The bus driver called the police who responded rapidly. Bowen was arrested and jailed. The 72 year old woman’s phone was retrieved. This all according to the 72 year old woman’s 75 year old husband who called me . ( same is said in Police report)
An ambulance, fire and police came, The victim woman was transported to BCH ER where she was treated. Her face is black and blue. As of Sunday she was resting at home . She and her husband who are retired professionals wish to remain anonymous at this time. A police report is available as a matter of public record. The husband stressed his concern about attacks on the elderly by homeless thugs of any gender in Boulder.
His wife likes to take the bus into town to go to Trident. She has a new small SUV but prefers the bus for convenience and environmental reasons . In previous conversations they have both mentioned to me that the Broadway bus often has agro homeless people. Now it has proved to be unsafe for them. What is also shocking is that Bowen brazenly attacked the 72 year old woman in front of everyone. As she lay on the ground the Bowen punched the 72 year old repeatedly 8 to 12 times. This was a very violent attack.
How many of of you have been attacked or verbally assaulted by street thugs? I know I have certainly been screamed at and once had my seat kicked on the Denver bus by agro homeless people., The husband wonders if his wife should carry a gun or a taser . But attackers can take those weapons from you and use them against you . Police say that happens statistically. Thugs are used to fighting . where as citizens are not,
It seems as long as Boulder treats the homeless as Pets and not address crime it will only get worse and the elderly are the victims. The 72 year old woman and her husband said that they will demand that the DA give this woman prison time no plea bargain. This was certainly felony assault. Violent offenders like this should be taken out of society and sent to one of our nice prison country clubs and not our jail. They have reported this information to the police. Jann Scott is a longtime Boulder TV Journalist and commentator.
UP DATE NOV 14 3 PM The 72 year old woman has been in contact with victims assistance from Boulder Police Department and from the DA’s office. She has been to the doctor for further treatment today. She was with detectives all day. Tomorrow there is another court hearing for the perpetrator who has already been charged with a serious felony and apparently will be charged with more. The perpetrator remains in jail Boulder. Police Department and DA’s office have been on top of this particular case. They are clearly going to send a message to street thugs: ‘ that if you beat up seniors, you’re going to spend a good long time in the State Penitentiary. That’s what I believe will happen here. Safe Boulder is meeting with a few City Council Members tonight. This problem exists because the Boulder City Council has not been willing to deal with street drug addicts, alcoholics and Street crime committed by homeless thugs…

UPDATED Nov 14 Appropriate DMs sent to me:
Hi Jann, We have witnessed a number of mentally ill, angry people on the SKIP bus going up and down Broadway, especially at times when they’re heading to the Homeless Shelter. I may be overstepping to assume, but to me it is pretty obvious who is homeless by what they carry, level of cleanliness, etc. What can we, as local residents, do about this situation? When I’ve returned from downtown at night, and our street is quite dark, I’ve had to think about what I’d do if one of the disturbed people followed me off the bus. I’m able, but not young. If you have any suggestions, I’d like to know who to call or write and if anyone at the city is interested in input about this. Finally, is there anything we can do for this couple? I would be happy to drive her/them if it works with our schedules or I would bring them groceries or anything else they might need. Joan Smith ………Joan , yes this is a serious problem and you have hit it perfectly. It seems security on the 208 bus by RTD or city is the solution. But getting council to see this rationally is a problem.. so the best we can do here is try to help solve one crime at a time and make sure the perpetrator gets prison time. it sends a message down onto the streets. SAFE BOULDER
Hi Jann. I am part of a group called SAFE Boulder. It was started by Chris Centeno, the doctor who lives on Mapleton Hill who found a convicted felon living in his basement while his family slept upstairs. He organized a group to try to tackle the increasing threats that have come along with the influx of homeless. The SAFE Boulder group has a listserve and posts various meetings that they’ve organized to address city council, police etc. I am wondering how to reach several of the people on your thread to see if they want to be on that listserve. Specifically I am wondering how to reach the victim’s husband. You are invited to join as well. Thank you. Janine
You Hi I have been invited before. I am interested in receiving emails. I have also been on the front lines of this issue since 1990 one in Boulder and in Denver and I’ve done quite a few videos written a lot and reported a lot of stories. So I’m with you on this for sure.. I will forward your email to the husband but they are very upset right now. There is another court hearing tomorrow. the perpetrator is being charged with a very serious crime and she will go to the women’s penitentiary. in cases like this people call me and then I go to the chief of police, the DA and make things happen. I try to solve one major crime by homeless thugs at a time. I am not very forgiving when it comes to these violent crimes . thanks Jann
From Melissa Healy, Newlands Jann Thank you for sharing the information concerning the 72 year old woman who was pulled from the bus. I hate seeing post detailed and turned political. I worry about elderly people in the area with mentally unstable people on the streets targeting them. I know there are many decent people who find themselves in a bad situation and become homeless, but the mentally unstable and drug abusers are a serious problem and endanger other’s safety. Not sure what I can do to help, but it breaks my heart hearing about that woman being hurt like that and I’d like to help in someway. ………….Hi. Thanks yes I forwarded your message to the couple. But you are absolutely correct in your assessment and people do like to turn this into a political issue. I just couldn’t have that it would revamp demise this poor lady. In the entire neighborhood because they all came out to help I mean Broadway was closed down with police and fire and ambulance and neighbors out Jann -End-
Aya JT, Rural North Boulder· This is heartbreaking on so many levels. Public transportation should be safe for everyone and affordable. But our city gives free bus rides to these type of homeless people and the homeless feel entitled to the public bus. It’s no longer a safe alternative transportation for families, workers, or elderly people. I can’t even handle no one stepped in from the bus, to help this elderly person. Thank goodness someone in a car, nonetheless, was able to assist. It seems like there needs to be security personnel on the buses for everyone’s safety.
Ronda Lawrence, Rural North Boulder· And no one on the bus came to her rescue??? When we do nothing, we are silently acquiescing and risk immoral behaviors becoming “normal”. Stand up….speak up! Makes me wonder what homelessness, shameless assault, and robbery (including scams), especially on our more vulnerable populations, are societal symptoms of? Why are people so desperate they will do this to their fellow human beings? Why are our basic standards of respect, honor and compassion degrading so much, so fast in this country? John Mayer, Rural North Boulder· Very sad to hear this. I am curious how this will be handled by the courts. Clearly this person needs to serve a prison sentence. We should follow-up and even attend the court hearing and trial as show of support for the victim. This has not been mentioned in the Camera…how can we follow up. Is the name of the arrested woman known?
Andy Malkiel, Rural North Boulder· This is really shocking and sad to hear. I wish the woman who got beaten up a speedy and full recovery. I’m guessing there are so few responses to this, because it is so shocking and people don’t know what to do. Does anyone have any suggestions of a course of action that we should take to help prevent things like this from happening in the future, and is there anything the elderly couple needs while she recovers?
Pete Wysong, Rural North Boulder· That’s awful. I’m glad the attacker was jailed. But how do you know she was homeless? Edited 9h ago · 44 neighborhoods in Crime & Safety ThankReplyReply
Nele New, Newlands·2d ago I’m crestfallen that this has happened and no one came to her immediate aid. Please ask the victim if we as a community could offer support, such as a general healing fund for comfort care that may not be covered by insurance, such as massage or acupuncture or a gift certificate to The Trident or other businesses to which she takes the bus? Raymond Hayes Raymond Hayes, Olde Stage Settlement·2d ago Unbelievable!! PEOPLE DID COME TO HER AID , BUT THE ATTACK HAPPENED SO FAST.
UPDATE NOV 16
My post on Nextdoor was taken down probably by someone complaining and filing a protest. so I put it up here. Lynn Segal put it back up there.

Charlotte Knudson, Wonderland Hills·2d ago This problem is many fold. At present we do not properly assess the stability of a homeless person. Are they Homeless because of financial problems Are they responsible. are they drug addicts. Many drug addicts are psychotic and paranoid and that is well documented. We as a community blithely offer help. as a result we put others in jeopardy.
